LESSON AIM: The aim of this lesson is to see how Jesus offers hope to the unaware.
B E LO NG in G od ’ s family: _____________________________________________________ CHECK IN: (optional) Let’s briefly share with each other how we’ve been doing this week. OPENING PRAYER ICEBREAKER: Have you ever experienced a miraculous or supernatural event? How did it strengthen – or challenge – your faith?
B E C O M E like Je sus: _____________________________________________________ 1. In Sunday’s message, we examined the story of Jesus’ first miracle. What new truth was revealed to you through this familiar story? 2. Let’s read John 2:1-11. Note the exchange between Mary and Jesus. Remember, for thirty years, thoughts about Jesus’ identity have lingered in her head – what might be Mary’s interest in seeing Him perform a miracle? How is Mary’s role in Jesus’ life changing, and do you think she is aware of it? What do you think He meant by His answer? 3. Now look at verses 6-7. What were the pots used for? What do you suppose the servants were thinking when Jesus asked them to ladle it out? In verses 8-10, did the master of the feast know what happened? How about the bridegroom? How do you explain their reactions to what happened?
4. Considering that a wedding feast was an important cultural and religious event in that day, sometimes continuing for days, what would be the implications of running out of wine? What message did Jesus send to the wedding couple by providing 120 gallons of the finest wine? What do Isaiah 55:1-2 and Matthew 22:2-4 say about Jesus’ invitation to us? 5. We see many different reactions to the miracle that Jesus performed. Many chose to take it for granted, or were unaware of what it pointed to. Can you identify an area of your life where you are beginning to see that God is at work, even though you were unaware of it before?
BL ES S o th er s : _____________________________________________________ Think about the fact that Jesus’ first miracle was at a wedding, and see Revelation 19:6-9. Whose marriage supper will this be? Who is invited to this feast? How can we help one another prepare for this feast?
BUI L D G o d ’s k i n g d o m : _____________________________________________________ Let’s look back at John 2:11. How does Jesus reveal His glory to us today? The world is full of alternate explanations for the miraculous. How can your faith point those who don’t yet believe to an awareness of Who Jesus really is?
BEL I EV E G o d a n d a c t i n fa i t h : _____________________________________________________ While Jesus’ first miracle involved pots, Scripture reminds us that we are the clay, and God the Potter. See Isaiah 45:9 and 64:8 and Jeremiah 18:3-4. What commitment can you make this week to be the clay in the Potter’s hands? PRAYER: What challenge are you facing this week? How can our group pray and support you? April 30, 2017
