BY LORI CATHEY The Gibson County High School girls’ basketball team suffered a 75-56 loss to Covington this past Tuesday night in Covington. The Lady Pioneers had to play the game without starting junior guard Nacole Johnson due to an illness. Covington held a 18-11 lead over the Lady Pioneers after the first quarter, which proved too much to overcome. Jasmine Whittemore hit back-toback jump shots to open the second quarter to make it 20-15, but Covington would have a 38-27 lead at the half. Whittemore scored 15 of the 27 points in the first half and was 4 of 4 from the free throw line. The Lady Pioneers
were outscored 24 to 15 by Covington in the third quarter. Covington had a 62-42 lead heading into the fourth. Lady Pioneer Sarah Beth Mullins scored 11 of the 14 points in the final quarter. Jasmine Whittemore and Sarah Beth Mullins led the Lady Pioneers with 21 points apiece. Whittemore was 8 of 8 from the free throw line and Mullins was 5 of 6 from the free throw line with 5 rebounds. Erin Lannom and Cara Beth Holt finished with 4 points each, Brianna Fetters had 3 points, Mackenna Upchurch added 2 points and Briana Fields had 1 point. The Lady Pioneers will face Martin Westview Monday 17 at 6:30 at Gibson County.
