Lady Pioneers defeat South Gibson County, Ripley

GCHS recognizes seniors BY LORI CATHEY The Gibson County High School held their annual Senior Night Friday, February 8. Seniors, along with their parents, were acknowledged for their accomplishments, hard work and dedication to the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams and cheerleaders. This year’s teams consisted of seven seniors. They are cheerleaders Courtney Churchwell with four years, Frankie Hall with four years, Kaitlin Jones with two years, Mallarie Riffe with four years, girls’ basketball Jasmine Whittemore with four years, and boys’ basketball Marcaous Bailey with two years and Houston Cunningham with four years.
The Lady Pioneers Friday night defeated South Gibson 71 to 57 to lock in fourth place for the District Tournament. Nacole Johnson connected on a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give Gibson County a 5 to 3 lead at the 4:38 mark. Erin Lannom with a steal took it the length of the court, which led to a pull-up jump shot basket for the freshman to give Gibson County a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Jasmine Whittemore and Brianna Fetters both knocked down 3-pointers in the second quarter. Lady Pioneer Sara Beth Mullins was fouled while driving for a lay-up with 15 seconds left in the quarter. Mullins made both foul shots to give Gibson County a 30-16 lead going into the locker room at halftime. A fast-break lay-up by Cara Beth Holt capped a 19-6 Gibson County run and gave the Lady Pioneers their biggest lead of the game, 4926, with 2:33 left in the third quarter. The Lady Pioneers held a 55-34 advantage over South Gibson County with three quarters complete. Gibson County kept their doubledigit lead in the fourth quarter. Gibson County won 71-57. The Lady Pioneers were 28 of 58 from the field, 10 of 11 from the free throw line.

Gibson County Pioneers faced South Gibson County in district play Friday night at Gibson County High School. With 3:25 remaining in the first quarter Houston Cunningham grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back to get the Pioneers on the scoreboard with South Gibson leading 7 -2. Joe Lee hit back-to-back jump shots and Cunningham made a jump shot from 6 feet out with 8 seconds left to get Gibson County within 3 points at the end of the quarter. The Pioneers went cold during the first four minutes of the second quarter being outscored 13 to 4. Gibson County battled back with baskets from Josh Bailey, Zach Eskew and Deonte Watson. Gibson County was down by 7 points 31-24 at halftime. Pioneers would pull within 4 points (36-32) on an inbound pass to Eskew for a basket with 2:50 left in the third quarter.
