Please bring all of these supplies to class, and be sure to put your name on all items you bring (just in case they are left behind). __ Machine and everything you need to use it (power cord, foot control, presser feet, bobbins, spool cap, etc.) __ * Sewing machine needles __ * Scissors __ Pencil & paper for taking notes __ * Glass head silk pins (or other good quality sewing pins) __ * Seam ripper __ * Thread Additional Items to Bring: __ * Small Cutting Mat and Rotary Cutter __ * Required Pattern: BQ Maple Island—Please order this from paramount at least 2 weeks prior to class. __ Refer to the pattern for yardage! You’ll need a panel that has at least 4 squares that can be cut from it. The pattern will indicate a 6-1/2” or 12-1/2” square, but they can be between 6-1/2” and 12-1/2”. You can also quarter a very large panel—for example, cut a 24” x 24” panel into 4 pieces. You will also need 2 other fabrics—a dark print or solid, and a light print or solid. The yardage for these is determined by the size of the quilt you will be making. This class will focus on how to construct these blocks using panels—how to cut them, piece them and position them to create a quilt top. Pre-wash your fabric if desired—DO NOT CUT fabric prior to class
Note: In this class, you will work on the quilt top, but we will not be actually finishing the quilt (batting, quilting, binding, etc.) during this class. You will do that on your own at home.

No Mess, No Fuss Applique Poinsettia Vase – Intermediate Appliqué This is a hand applique class devoted to using a specific and unique applique method taught by the instructor. This applique method DOES NOT use freezer paper, glue, templates, hemostats, or overlays -- hence the name “No Mess, No Fuss Applique.” The method is highly portable and able to fit in a baggie in your purse. Approximate finished size of the wall quilt is 24” x 30” without borders (30” x 36” with borders). This class meets twice. Prerequisite is Glenda’s Beginning No Mess No Fuss. Applique Fabric: 100% cotton is “user-friendly” while polyester blends should be avoided. ____ Purchase fat quarters or 1/3 yard cuts of appliqué fabrics. Choose white, pink, or bright red for the Poinsettias (at least 5 different fabrics), and lots of greens for the leaves. Pinecones can be various shades of brown or rust. The vase can be a color of your choice, but works nicely with 3 different fabrics, or shades of your color choice. Other Fabrics: ____ Background fabric - 26” x 32” rectangle. Try to choose a light colored (white, beige, tan, etc.) fabric. DO NOT use a dark background fabric for this method. Tone-on-tone works nicely, but do not get fabric where you can “feel” the pattern. This is harder to needle. ____ Borders (Optional) –2/3 yard for 1st and 3rd borders, miscellaneous fabrics for the pieced border. ____ Backing Fabric - 34” x 40” fabric for quilt back. (Not needed for class) ____ Batting Fabric - 34” x 40” batting. (Not needed for class) ____ Binding Fabric – 1/3 yard. (Not needed for class) Threads: ____*Match thread colors to your appliqué fabric. 100 weight silk thread or 60 weight spools of machine embroidery thread (not the shiny kind) ____*A light colored hand quilting thread. If you do not have any, buy a bright goldenrod color. ____ One skein DMC embroidery floss for thin stems. Other Supplies: ____ Pattern – Poinsettia Vase Wall Quilt, pattern #99-23, from Distinctive Pieces (phone 505-8215588 or www.distinctivepieces.com, or email to
[email protected]). ____ *Bring regular sewing scissors and small, pointed stork-type scissors, if you have them. However, I find that the *Kai 5” and the *Ginger 5” craft scissors work very well. I will show these to you in class. If you need to purchase scissors, please wait until the first class so that you will understand what scissors work best for the technique. ____ Thimble – any kind you are comfortable using ____ *Size 10 Milliners needles (Richard Hemming brand is very good) ____ *Size 10 or 11 “sharps” needles (Richard Hemming brand is very good). ____ *One THICK-line blue wash-out fabric marking pen, such as Mark-B-Gone. The thin-line marker doesn’t work for my technique. (Do not use the kind that disappears on its own, without water.) ____ *Medium sized cutting mat, ruler, and rotary cutter. Pre-class instructions: ____ Important: Students must order their own pattern from designer shown above. ____ Wash & press all fabrics before class to remove sizing, pre-shrink fabric, & test for color fastness. ____ Pre-cut the background fabric into a 26” x 32” rectangle before the first class. Optional: You may also sew or serge a narrow finish around the edges to avoid fraying. ____ Trace pattern onto background as instructed in beginning No Mess, No Fuss.
No Mess, No Fuss Appliqué Glenda’s Gingko Leaf Pattern -- Beginner skill level (1 class) This is a hand appliqué class devoted to using a specific and unique appliqué method taught by Glenda Correll. This method DOES NOT use freezer paper, glue, templates, hemostats or overlays – hence the name, “No Mess, No Fuss”! Because the usual supplies mentioned above are not required, your project will be highly portable. It can be easily tucked into a purse for onthe-go sewing! Samples can be viewed at Paramount and on my web site at
http://www.glyncor.com/beginning-applique.html Fabrics: It is important to pre-wash and press all fabrics •
•
Background - One 14” square of plain, light colored (white, beige, tan, etc.) fabric. Do not use a dark background. Tone-on-tone works nicely, but do not get fabric where you can “feel” the pattern. This is a “rubberized” fabric printing form that is hard to needle by hand. Applique Fabric – 1 piece 8” x 9” for center Gingko Leaf area; 2 pieces 4 1/2” x 7 1/2” for Ginkgo Leaf sides; 1 piece 2” x 5” for stem. (Bring a small amount of extra fabric in case of error in cutting, or in case you wish to center a specific fabric design in the large leaf area.).
Threads: • *Match thread colors to your applique fabric. 100 weight silk thread or 60 weight spools of machine embroidery thread (not the shiny kind) • *A light colored hand quilting thread. If you do not have any, buy a bright goldenrod color. Sewing Supplies: • Bring regular sewing scissors and small, pointed stork-type scissors, if you have them. However, I find that the *Kai 5” and the *Ginger 5” craft scissors work very well. I will show these to you in class. If you need to purchase scissors, please wait until the first class so that you will understand what scissors work best for the technique. • Thimble (optional) – any kind you are comfortable using • *Size 10 “Milliners” or “Straw” needles (Richard Hemming brand is very good) • *Size 10 “sharps” needles (Richard Hemming brand is very good). • *One THICK-line blue wash-out fabric marking pen, such as Mark-B-Gone. The thin-line marker doesn’t work for my technique. (Do not use the kind that disappears on its own, without water.) • Small cutting mat, small ruler, and rotary cutter. NOTE: Supplies Paramount may stock are marked with an asterisk *.
Pre-class instructions: • •
Wash and press all fabrics before class to remove sizing, pre-shrink fabric, and test for color fastness. Pre-cut the background fabric into a 14” square before the first class.
