Baldwinsville Lacrosse 2014 Player/Parent Guide ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------As a participant in the Baldwinsville Lacrosse program, we want each player to know that excellence in academics, good sportsmanship, and good citizenship are our fundamental goals for each one of you. Further, we want each member of our four teams to have a positive experience in which they improve their individual and team skills, and above all have fun playing lacrosse for Baldwinsville. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Baldwinsville Lacrosse Players Manual Introduction The primary purpose of this handbook is to advise you of the program rules, policies, and procedures of the Baldwinsville Boys Lacrosse Program. You are responsible to read, know and understand the complete contents of this handbook. In the event there is something in this handbook that you do not understand, please bring it to the attention of the coaching staff. The following pages, in addition to the Baldwinsville School District Athletic Code of Conduct Manual, spell out a code of conduct for you as a person, player, student and member of this lacrosse program. If we are to be successful, you must adhere to this code of conduct. Actually, all of this can be summed up in two words . . . COMMON SENSE! This handbook was made to encourage the lines of communication between you and your coaches. Being a part of a great lacrosse team and program can only be accomplished when we know what is expected of us. This booklet is a guide for that purpose.

Coaches General Thoughts on the Program

My thoughts on team concept and what will mold us into a team are listed below. Remember, being a part of a team means that you must give up a little of your individuality. All actions and decisions you make must be considered in regard to the effect it has upon the team. 1) Your foremost goal should be to develop yourself as a student. Baldwinsville has a great academic program which, if used properly, can make a significant contribution to your life. Do not waste your time in class. If you’re missing practice time because of your neglect in your academics, you are in fact hurting the team. 2) Your second goal should be to develop yourself into a quality high school lacrosse player and athlete with the drive to play at the next level. When it comes to Spring season, give your total effort to lacrosse. Playing other sports is essential and encouraged, but you need to concentrate on this sport during the season. No one else should disrupt that. 3) The coaching staff has confidence in you as a young man, a student, and as an athlete. Set high expectations in the classroom and on the field,… and live up to them! 4) Never get into a situation that would cause embarrassment to yourself, the team, your family, your coaches or to your school. Abide by the athletic code of conduct with respect and integrity. Any actions against the School Code of Conduct will not be tolerated. Do the right thing and appropriate rewards will come to you.

Academics, Behavior, Attitude and Physicals 1) Academics a) Scholastic eligibility code (see Athletic Code of Conduct) is strictly enforced. b) Study time after school, before practice, for those who are not ineligible but are behind in their studies. If this is happening frequently, YOU ARE HURTING THE TEAM. c) ALL JV and Varsity players MUST BE IN SCHOOL FOR THE FULL DAY in order to practice or play in a game unless they have a written LEGAL excuse (see Athletic Code of Conduct, Section 3). 2) Behavior/Attitude (school, field, classroom, community) a) Athletic Code of Conduct strictly enforced – read thoroughly. b) We expect all participants to be positive role models in terms of appearance and communication with all teacher, coaches and adults in the community. c) Obey all rules set forth by team coaches; for example, a curfew at the Varsity and JV level or promptness at meeting or team gatherings. Breaking the “team rules” could result in anything from a reprimand or game suspension to dismissal from the team. d) Any athlete who is insubordinate in school or during any practice session or game will be subject to disciplinary action by team coach ranging from reprimand to dismissal from the team. 3. Physicals a) If you haven’t seen the school nurse and completed your PreParticipation Form, do so immediately! b) Cannot practice without written clearance (yellow copy of PreParticipation Form) from the nurse. This sheet must be handed directly to the coach and he checks its against the register. DO THIS NOW! You are expected to have this completed at least 3 days before practice begins.

2. Important Dates: Monday

3. Practice a) Players should have two sets of clothes for outdoor and gym workouts. b) Players should have sneakers and cleats with them. c) Players should try to have an old stick for practice on cold days. d) Missing practice is not tolerated and is punishable by a one game suspension. Any subsequent missed practices will result in additional suspensions or dismissal from team, depending on the level at which you play. e) All Baldwinsville players at all levels should wear a pair of red shorts for all practices and scrimmages. Get them now and be ready! f) All Baldwinsville players should have a white shirt as their outer shirt at all times in practices and scrimmages. Baldwinsville scrimmage vests will be work over these shirts.

4. Parent-Coach Relationship. The coaching staff is available to discuss concerns you have regarding your child. Appropriate concerns to discuss with coaches: - The treatment of your child – mentally and physically - Ways to help your child improve. - Concerns about your child’s behavior. - Your child’s academics. Issues not appropriate to discuss with coaches: - Playing time. - Play calling. - Team strategy. - Other student-athletes. ***Please contact Coach Fiorini, as coordinator of the program, before you contact the District Office regarding anything to do with the Lacrosse Program. This is a common courtesy that is greatly appreciated by the coaching staff and the athletic department. Anonymous letters are unread and discarded.***

Baldwinsville Boys Lacrosse Booster Club http://www.Baldwinsvillelax.com/ The Baldwinsville Boys Lacrosse Booster Club is a non-profit, volunteer organization run by parents and friends of the lacrosse program. The purpose of the club is to assist and enhance the lacrosse athletic program of the Baldwinsville School District. It works to raise money to support and supplement the schools’ lacrosse budget and provide additional support to the program. In past years the club has purchased helmets, uniforms and warm-ups, and every year they purchase supplies and equipment for all levels of play. The club maintains a website http://www.Baldwinsvillelax.com/ that provides information on the lacrosse program, including rosters, schedules and out of season events. The club covers costs of early season indoor or turf rental space. Every year, the club puts on an end of season picnic for all players and families, awards scholarships to graduating seniors and provides team awards. The club relies on volunteers to make the program successful. Volunteers are needed for a wide range of activities, from serving as Board Members to working in the concession stand, running the scoreboard or helping with the end of season picnic. The club meets once a month and all are welcome to attend - check the website for meeting details. Baldwinsville Lacrosse 2014 Keys to Success

1. Equipment: Sneakers and cleats - - you need both. Helmet - - clean and with all buckles and snaps. White T-shirt to be worn at all practice and scrimmages. Red shorts to be worn at all practices and scrimmages. Legal gloves, shoulder pads, arm pads and a cup. Warm clothes - - layers to be worn and shed accordingly. Two old sticks - - NOT YOUR GOOD ONE! Combination lock for lockers. Hats and jackets for after practices. KEEP EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHES CLEAN!! 2. Priorities Get organized: Family responsibilities. School work completed on and done well. Individual lacrosse skills practiced & improved upon - - - stick skills Social life – Be Smart! ***DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME! USE IT WISELY AND GET ORGANIZED!***

3. Daily Schedule Wake up Eat a good well-balanced breakfast – juice, carbs, protein & lots of fluids. Get to school on time. Morning classes - - Behave and do your best work. Lunch – fruit carbs, lots of fluids – compliment your morning choices. Afternoon classes – Behave and do your best work. Practice 3:00 – 6:00 – check equipment before and after. Take care of bumps and bruises. Dinner – Healthy food and lots of fluids (All 3 daily meals should complement each other). Homework completed and done correctly. Free time – DON’T WASTE IT – eat a healthy snack. GO TO BED BY 10:00 and GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP! REST and RECOVER.

SECTION III OF THE N.Y.S.P.H.S.A.A SPECTATOR CODE OF BEHAVIOR/ETHICS 1. Direct all energies to encouraging your team. 2. Avoid actions, which offend visiting teams or individual players. 3. Show appreciation of good play by both teams. 4. Learn the rules of the game in order to be a more intelligent spectator. 5. Treat all visiting teams in a manner in which you would expect to be treated. 6. Accept the judgment of coaches and officials. 7. Encourage other spectators to participate in the spirit of good sportsmanship. 8. Be positive. STUDENT ATHLETES CODE OF BEHAVIOR 1. To demonstrate self-control and respect for others at all times be they officials, spectators, or other athletes. 2. To remember that participation in athletics is a privilege that is not to be abused by unsportsmanlike conduct. 3. To deal with opponents with respect. Shake hands after the competition and congratulate them on their performance. 4. To respect the integrity and judgment of the officials. 5. To remember that improper behavior while in uniform reflects poorly upon yourself, your school, and your community. 6. To understand and abide by the rules and regulations of the game. 7. To accept victory with grace and defeat with dignity. COACHES CODE OF BEHAVIOR/ETHICS 1. To promote good sportsmanship, by setting a positive example while coaching your athletes. 2. To respect the integrity and judgment of the sports officials. 3. To approach competition as a healthy and constructive exercise, not as a life and death struggle that requires victory at any price. 4. To recognize that the participants in individual or team sports are young men and women with human frailties and limitations, who are capable of making mistakes. 5. To not use crude or abusive language with players, opponents, officials, or spectators. 6. To instruct the players in the elements of good sportsmanship and remove players from competition who demonstrate unsportsmanlike behavior. 7. To avoid behavior that will incite players, opponents, or spectators. 8. To avoid and eliminate negative comments to radio, TV, and newspaper reporters
