Dear Parents, Welcome to Awana Clubs at Meadow Creek Church in Andover! Excitement is in the air as we have been gearing up and preparing for a great year. We are anticipating an enjoyable time for the children and pray that they will take pleasure in being with their friends as they learn God’s Word and discover practical applications that are found within.
Parent Guide
It is our prayer that you will spend quality time with your child as they prepare for each club night. Through the material your child will grow closer to God and learn how to serve Him. Please be sure to read over this handbook with your child and discover the many opportunities for you and your child. Please call one of us if you have any questions or concerns about the Awana Clubs or other children’s ministries offered at Meadow Creek Church. Club Attendance
A Typical Night at Awana
Awana is held on Sunday afternoons from 4:30 pm 6:00 pm. The club year is divided into four quarters. Attendance awards are given out to clubbers that have no more than two absences per quarterly period.
Cubbies
Check-in and Pick-up Procedures In an effort to insure each and every child is safe while at Awana Club, the following procedures will be followed.
Check-In Cubbies will need to be dropped off in their room and checked in there. Sparks and T&T’s will sign in at the Lobby check in tables.
Dismissal Cubbies will not be dismissed to a sibling. A parent or guardian must pick each Cubby up from their room. Sparks and T&T will be dismissed from the sanctuary. They are to remain in the sanctuary until picked up by an adult. Please send a signed, handwritten note if you would prefer your child walk to another part of the church for pick-up. 4
This program provides preschoolers with foundational truths about God, the Bible, and salvation. It features Scripture memorization and basic Bible truths preschoolers can understand. The Cubbies program encourages parents and club leaders to work as a team in spiritually nurturing your child. Since home is the primary place for spiritual nurture, Awana Cubbies is designed to equip, encourage, and support parents in this task. Each week parents help their child complete the scheduled Bear Hug. Each part of the Bear Hug teaches the same Bible truth. We will reinforce the Bible truth through our club activities. By creating this partnership, we hope to “cement” each week’s truth into our Cubbies’ hearts and minds. Meadow Creek Church Cubbies have their own schedule during the Awana time. Cubbies have the opportunity to play games, sing songs, have a lesson/story time, work on a coloring sheet project or craft project, and have a snack. There is also time to say the weekly memory verse and complete the scheduled Bear Hug! Cubbies do not earn Awana store points, but will be given the opportunity to pick something out of the Cubbies’ treasure chest 4 times during the club year.

Sparks and T & T Each week all Sparks and T & T Clubbers participate in three distinct activities. Handbook Time Game Time Large Group Time After meeting together for an Opening Ceremony, each group moves around on a different track. The Sparks stay together on one track and T&T move around on another track. For Game Time, the clubbers will be organized into four different teams. Each team has a color: red, blue, green, or yellow. Each team will have one or two leaders. These teams are subject to change as deemed necessary.
Handbook Time Handbook time is the club segment when leaders assist clubbers in their achievements of memorizing God’s Word and other activities. At the beginning of the club year, each clubber will be given an entrance booklet of general information and material to be memorized. Once they have passed the requirements of this booklet, they are eligible to become an official member of the Awana Club. At that time, they will receive a uniform and a handbook. See prices in back of this handbook. Be sure that your child’s name is written in their handbook 6
Handbook Time (Cont.) and they bring it each club night along with their Bible. Handbook bags are also available for purchase. It is very important that parents encourage and work with their children in their books. Each clubber should work at home throughout the week in preparation for the Awana Club meeting. Sections of the handbook are passed in their entirety in one sitting. This includes definitions and questions. Passing approximately 2 sections (Sparks) or 3 sections (T&T) each club night should enable a clubber to pass one book each year. The Sparks’ handbooks come with a CD to assist them in memorizing their verses. T&T have a CD available for purchase through the church office.
Game Time Game time is the club segment when clubbers enjoy fun games on the unique Awana game circle. Sparks and T&T will be assigned one of the four team colors (red, blue, green, or yellow) to play games. Visitors will be placed on the color team of the person that brought them. This is a highlight of the evening for many; parents, please plan to stay and watch from time to time. Please send your children in tennis shoes each week.
7
Large Group Time Each week Awana clubbers will be presented with a Biblical Truth. This is a rich time where clubbers will learn the truth out of God’s Word.

The AWANA Game Circle Many local Churches participate each spring in AwanaGames™. This is an interchurch competition. More than 600 AwanaGames™ events typically take place in the U.S. each year, with numerous others held worldwide. Sparks-a-Rama is the Sparks version of AwanaGames™ but with less intense competition. Sparks-a-Rama focuses on fun and meeting new friends through playing games. Emphasis is also placed on learning sportsmanship from a biblical perspective. Sparks-a-Rama is usually held on the same day as AwanaGames™.
Cubbies wear a blue vest. (For 2 years) Sparks wear a red vest. (For 3 years) rd th 3 – 4 Grade T&T wear a green shirt. (For 2 years) 5th – 6th Grade T&T wear a blue and white shirt. (For 2 years) Be sure to order one a little larger than needed so your child will not outgrow their uniform before they leave their club. Please wear tennis shoes.
Awards Your child has the opportunity to earn awards throughout the club year. Most awards are earned by passing sections in handbooks, but some are given for attendance. In addition, there will be an Awards Ceremony at the end of the club year where all children will receive either a certificate for participating in AWANA or one of the following awards:

The History of AWANA The word AWANA stands for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed, and this comes from 2 Timothy 2:15. “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” As a ministry leader for 60 years, Awana is making an impact. A recent national survey found Awana to be as important to our alumni's spiritual foundation as all other church activities combined. Among alumni who participated in our programs for at least six years, 92.7 percent still attend church at least weekly as adults! Each week, more than 1.5 million kids ages 2 to 18 participate in Awana. Over 12,000 churches in the U.S. and more than 10,000 churches internationally in over 80 countries run Awana programs that change young lives through biblical truth.

Opening Ceremony Prayer – everyone quiet with heads bowed and hats off. Pledge – everyone with right hand over heart and saying the pledge to the American flag and the Bible. Game Time Good sportsmanship. Participation is encouraged. Stay behind your team color line or assigned area. Listen for instructions. Cheer for your team. Have fun! Handbook Time Bibles and handbooks are needed every Awana night. If a Clubber is not passing a section with a leader, they should be studying their handbook. When talking, Clubbers should keep it down to a whisper. Do not disturb others. Room contents (dry-erase boards & markers, etc.) are off limits.

Awana Standards (cont)
Large Group Time
Clubbers are expected to be quiet, except when called upon. Everyone is encouraged to participate in all of the Large Group Time activities. Everyone is expected to stay in their seats during Large Group Time, unless the Leader needs for them to stand. Disrupting others is strongly discouraged.
General Standards (Cont.)
Language is to be positive and uplifting. Negative humor is to be avoided. Questionable or improper language (such as in profanity, rudeness, etc.) is not acceptable. Each person is fully responsible for all personal items; valuables and toys should be left at home. Church facilities will be properly cared for and straightened after each use. All leaders, workers and other adults will be respected at all times (in action and attitudes). To avoid interrupting segments of the night, restroom breaks need to be completed before segments begin.
General Standards
16
Pushing, shoving and roughhousing are not allowed. Running is allowed only on the game circle during game time. Gum and candy should be left at home and not brought to club. Clothing should be worn in a modest fashion at all times.
Weather Occasionally Awana at Meadow Creek Church will need to be cancelled due to inclement weather. If this should happen, an email will go out to all families, and a notice will be posted on the Meadow Creek Church Awana website: http://meadowcreekchurch.org/#/for-kids/awana

The Five-Count The five-count is used often throughout the evening every week at AWANA. This will become recognized by all as a sign to stop talking and listen to instructions. During any segment of the night the five-count is used to get Sparks and T&T clubbers attention. A Director does the five-count by slowly and loudly counting to five. At the same time Clubbers are to count with his or her fingers only, raised high so everyone will get the message. By the count of five, all are expected to be still and quiet.
The Three-Count The three-count is used infrequently throughout the year. This is a method for disciplining an individual clubber who continues to misbehave after repeated correction; this method follows the three strikes philosophy. If an individual continually disobeys an Awana standard, (found on pages 15-17), they will receive “one” strike, and a leader will explain what will happen if he/she receives a “two” or “three” strike. If that individual continues to disobey, he/she will receive a “two” strike, the director will counsel with the child. Then, if he/she still does not cooperate, they will receive a “third” strike. At that time, the commander will counsel with them, and possibly, a phone call to their parents will be made. The child will explain to their parents what has happened.
18
Awana Store Clubbers earn Awana points for: attendance bringing their handbook and Bible following the theme (if any) bringing a friend wearing their Awana vest/shirt games they play during Game Time These points are like money and can be spent in the Awana store that will be held four times during the club year.
Food Bags/Offering We plan an annual Christmas Food Bag service project for the kids every fall. From September through the middle of December we encourage the children to bring in offering of $1 a week to reach a pre-set monetary goal. We will be partnering with our MercyWorks Market here at Meadow Creek Church to distribute the food. After the Food Bag project concludes there will not be a regular weekly offering taken at Awana.
