Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next—Through Strong Heart Connections

PA R ENTS PAGE July 24-26, 2011 Influence in Your Church—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a teenager goes first): When it’s your turn, say: Teens do many things with their bodies that dishonor their families and God. Your choices are far better. One area of your life where I have seen you make godly decisions about your body is . . . 2. Read Scripture: Invite a family member to pray. Ask family members to read 1 Timothy 4:11-12. Discuss the Truth and Untruths in light of these verses. Truth • God calls believers to serve Him even when they are young. Untruths • Only older, married people should serve God in church. • Only those with a degree should serve God in church. • Young people are not supposed to lead or serve in church. 3. Explore Scripture: Say: Some scholars believe Timothy became a believer around A.D. 46 and was in a leadership role by the age of 35, which was unusual in those days. Timothy was leading men who were old enough to be his father, but Paul encouraged him to be an example of how to serve those older men. Point out that Samuel, David, Solomon, and Daniel also served at younger ages. Explain that Paul encouraged Timothy to serve in a way that would draw respect from both his peers and older church members. Say: Timothy was wise to listen to the counsel and support from a leader like Paul. 4. Think It Through: A teenager will lead this step. 5. Nail It Down: Ask: Do you remember the story about David and Goliath? What would have happened if young David had decided not to do his part and challenge Goliath? Remind your teenagers that there are many ways they can serve God, including ministries through the church. Say: You can be an example of serving God with your speech and attitude. Today’s verses should encourage you to serve and not look down on yourself. 6. Pray: A teenager will lead this prayer. 7. Blessing: Say: May God bless you for serving Him regardless of your age. Parent Tip: Don’t join the world by trying to force your child to fit a particular mold. Let children be who God created them to be. Perhaps you had hoped for an athlete, but you got an artist. Trust God! He created your son or daughter for his own purpose and joy. He never makes a mistake.
