Meet the Teacher Welcome, to the Outdoor Adventures class at Paris Junior High School! My name is Steve Tucker and this is my sixteenth year to teach in Paris ISD.
I graduated from Paris High School in 1991, and then attended Paris Junior College. I transferred to East Texas State University (now Texas A&M-Commerce) graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Agricultural Education in 1996. I have taught at several schools in PISD over the years. I spent 1 year at Paris High School as a Special Services Teaching Assistant. From there I moved to Crockett for 1 year as the LIFE Skills teacher. From Crockett I went back to PHS where I taught Resource Math for four years. I also coached in the Special Olympics Program. In 2002, I moved to Travis Junior High School as the Home Maintenance and Improvement Instructor. The 2007-2008 school year brought a new challenge, the Outdoor Adventures program. This class has been very popular and we now teach three sections. This will be the fifth year that this class has been offered. The 2010-2011 school year we moved to the new Paris Junior High School campus and added 7th graders to our family. My hobbies include: fishing, hunting, boating, camping, tinkering with old tractors, gardening, landscaping, and home improvement projects. Again, welcome!
Outdoor Education Overview Outdoor Adventures is a hands-on based course. Several subjects will be covered, such as: Safety, Hunter Education, Boater Education, Angler Education, Archery, GPS, Dutch Oven Cooking, and others. In conjunction with these topics I plan to have guest speakers come into the classroom and discuss topics the class has been studying. I also plan on the class taking several field trips through out the year. Be ready for lots of activity!

Hunter Education The purpose of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Departments Hunter Education program is to produce knowledgeable, responsible, and involved hunters. Continuing the tradition of hunting and outdoor sports.
Students will have the opportunity to take the certification exam at the end of this unit. The fee for certification is included in the course lab fee. Students passing the exam will receive their Hunter Education Certificate from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. This certificate is needed before a person born on or after September 2, 1971, can LEGALLY hunt in the state of Texas. The certificate is also valid in other states. Students will be provided the opportunity to earn a hunting trip at a local ranch. This event is NOT a school-sponsored activity. This hunting trip would be under the jurisdiction of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Hunter Education Division. More information to come on the hunting trip opportunity.
Archery The Outdoor Adventures class will also be participating in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). Students will learn the proper steps to successfully shooting an arrow. The Genesis Compound Bow will be used. This is a great compound bow with its automatically adjusting draw length and easily adjustable draw weight. Students will have the opportunity to use the Genesis Compound Bow in a “Live Fire” setting numerous times during the school year.
Please remember that safety is a big issue, especially during this activity. The bows will be shooting at a minimum of 10 pounds and a maximum of 20 pounds. An arrow shot at the 10-pound setting can cause SERIOUS injury!! Any student who does not treat this activity with the appropriate level of safety will lose the privilege and possible be removed from the class. Paris Outdoor Adventures

Boater Education Students in the Outdoor Adventures class will study boater education and have the opportunity to receive their certification. The Texas Legislature has changed the boater education law. Beginning September 1, 2011, all persons born on or after September 1, 1993, must take and pass a Boater Ed course to legally operate a watercraft on public waters in the state of Texas. The class will not go “afloat” on a vessel. A boat will be available for display during class discussion. Guest speakers will also be brought in to talk about boating safety, boating laws, as well as other issues. Students will learn the parts of a vessel, the “rules of the road”, safety, required equipment, boating laws, plus more.
Angler Education The unit that I am looking forward to the most is angler education, I am a die-hard fisherman. As a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Master Angler I will be guiding students to acquire the skills needed to become an advanced angler. Students will identify the different types of angling equipment and appropriate use. Students will also learn to identify and be able to produce at least four fishing knots. Other skills to be learned include: fish identification, bag and size limits, casting, and tackle. The class will be taking at least one “fishing” field trip. I am planning a couple of other educational field trips during the Angler Ed unit.

Welcome To Paris Junior High School I am looking forward to a Great year at PJH! The Outdoor Adventures program will be participating in numerous activities this year, everything from archery to outdoor cooking. The class will take field trips to Cabela’s Outdoor World, Bass Pro Shops, Trophy Room Tour, Fishing Trip(s), and an Outdoor Cooking Day just to name a few. In order to fund all the activities for this year the students will be expected to participate in at least one fundraising activity, possibly two depending on success of the fundraiser. The major fundraiser of the year will be a cookie dough sale through Fresh Country Fundraising. More information will be forth coming on the fundraiser. Students need to remember that field trips are a privilege. This said there are requirements for being eligible for field trips; please refer to the Student Expectations Packet. Parents, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. Students, Welcome to the Paris Junior High School Outdoor Adventures Program!
