May 2011 Celebrate Respect

Principal’s Message Respect As we grow as unique persons, we learn to respect the uniqueness of others. - Robert Schuller

(Dads and Dad Substitutes) Research shows that children do better academically when DADS are involved in literacy related activities. Eleven families are currently involved in the DADS Home Reading program at Parkview. There is room for ten more families to participate. Contact Mrs. Ritchie if interested.

At Parkview Public School, spring is in the air! Students have been working very hard and also been fortunate to experience a number of enrichment opportunities. Eric Wilson, Canadian author, came to Parkview to share his extensive experience with students in grades three to six . Mr. Wilson’s presentation covered many interesting topics including photos from his recent trip to Nunavut to research his next book. Mr. Wilson thoroughly enjoyed his time at the school and was full of praise for our students. All Parkview Panthers were treated to a fine art workshop with local artist Terry Bateman, and the result of their hard work is on display in many classrooms. Thank you to Mrs. Groenke for working with Terry in the library. Thank you to all of the students, too, for representing us well while working with Terry. He was very impressed with your enthusiasm and talent! Mathletes – a program that focuses on the importance of math learning and fun – will be coming to Parkview in May, thanks to the fundraising efforts of Parents for Parkview. Students in grades three to six will be competing in math activities that promote fun, co-operation and learning, led by some of Central Senior’s intermediate students. Our basketball team represented us well again this year, moving on to County and making it to the semi-finals! Congratulations to all students and thank you to Mr. MacLean and Mrs. Rowbotham for coaching. Our Battle of the Books team also did us proud at the TLDSB competition at Dr. George Hall. Congratulations to the Bookaneers and thank you to Mrs. Groenke for all of her work with the school competition. Our skipping team has been practising hard and is looking forward to competing in May. Thank you to Mrs. Rowbotham for coaching. EQAO, our provincial assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics for Primary and Junior divisions will take place May 30 – June 10 this year in grades three and six.

Parkview’s Good Citizens Pitch In! The dull and rainy weather did not dampen the spirits of our eco-minded students carrying out their Earth Day activities. The whole school turned out enthusiastically to pick up garbage and recycling in areas surrounding the Parkview. Each morning, Eco Team members read their research and timely messages including why we should turn off taps and the facts behind the use of water bottles. Mr. MacLean’s class demonstrated that Earth Day is every day when they volunteered to clean up after the high winds spread debris across the school yard from neighbouring recycle bins. The Eco Club is currently re-vamping the composting procedures at the school. Classrooms will receive new buckets and the team will be making an-

A Toronto Experience for the Choir Junior Choir members had a fantastic day when they went to see The Lion King in Toronto in April. It was a wonderful experience for all involved. Students were on their best behaviour and demonstrated responsibility and enthusiasm—wonderful ambassadors for Parkview!. Thank you to the parent volunteers, Mr. Paul and Mrs. Hennekam, who helped to make sure the trip ran smoothly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Art Workshop a Great Success! Local artist, Terry Bateman, provided a fun-filled art experience for every class, from Kindergarten to grade 6, during his recent visit to Parkview. Mr. Bateman—whose chosen style for his own artwork is pointillism—spent two hectic days at the school. Each student produced a piece of abstract art. Many of these pieces are on display around the school. Photos show a range of creations from several classes.

Canadian Author Visits Parkview Parkview students in grades 3—6 received a rare treat on April 7thwhen author Eric Wilson visited the school. Mr. Wilson was in the area to lead a boys’ literacy symposium held at Jack Callaghan Public School. Two boys were selected from each local school to attend. Here, Mr. Wilson is pictured with Logan and Jaden who had attended the symposium the day before.

Mr. Wilson kept everyone absorbed and entertained as he recounted how he became an author and gave tips to our budding young writers.

“Just the facts, ma’am”...students decide if the suspect’s story holds true.

Our aspiring detectives were engaged by Mr. Wilson’s observation and listening challenges, and students received autographed postcards for their correct deductions and recall.
