Beautiful teen taken too soon The death of an 18-year-old Whyalla woman has shaken the local community. Sarah Girvan was travelling from Adelaide to Whyalla on Thursday, June 30, when her Mitsubishi Lancer collided with an oncoming four-wheel drive, which was towing a caravan, 1.5 kilometres outside of Lochiel at about 7.15pm. She died at the scene of the crash, while the two occupants of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries. Since the accident, a facebook page has been set up as a tribute to Sarah, with more than 3000 facebook users supporting the page. Sarah graduated from Samaritan College in 2010, and was a dedicated member of Warriors A grade netball team. A minute silence was held at Saturday’s netball game between Warriors and True Blue, with members of the netball community gathering to pay their respects to Sarah and her family. Sarah’s boyfriend’s mother, Trish Tzantzoglou, said Sarah had had a big impact on her life. “Sarah has been in our lives for a short time and during that time my family have gotten to know her well,” she said. “She touched the lives of everybody she ever met, as you would see through the tributes that are flowing through facebook. “She had this incredible gift of knowing just the right thing to say or do when somebody else was hurting. “She could make you smile when all you wanted to do was cry. “Sarah was a huge part of our family and we loved her more than words can describe and I know none of us will ever forget her. “She has had an impact on so many, through her school, her work, her sport and mostly her family and she will leave a huge hole in everybody’s lives and hearts.” Sarah was the daughter of Linda and Walter Girvan and step-daughter to Tom Brown, a twin sister to Simone Girvan and a girlfriend to Nick Tzantzoglou. The South Australian road toll now stands at 62, compared to 69 at the same time last year. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact BankSA Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.sa.crimestoppers.com.au.

An ‘angelic soul’ The family of popular Whyalla girl, Sarah Girvan, have extended their appreciation to the Whyalla community for all its support. A cousin to Sarah, Holly Girvan, said her family had been overwhelmed by the amount of support they had received following the news of Sarah’s death. “The support our family has been given from the Whyalla community is phenomenal, the abundance of calls, cards and flowers shows the positive impact Sarah had on everyone’s lives,” she said. “Everyone has gone to visit and are sending flowers, which is really helping them and showing how loved she was.” Holly said she had been shocked by the death of her younger cousin, but would never forget her loving nature. “Sarah Girvan was an amazing girl that will never be forgotten,” she said. “She was my best friend, as well as my beautiful and loved cousin, the most honest yet sincere person who will always put you first, who loved to surprise you with her generosity. “Words can’t describe how beautiful she was. “This beautiful girl will always be in my heart and will never be forgotten.” Holly said her family had been proud of Sarah’s achievements within her academic career as well as her personal achievements. She said Sarah had been the first grandchild in the family to complete high school and be accepted into university, where she had planned to study pharmacy. Another cousin of Sarah, Ian Girvan said he had still not come to terms with the passing of his younger cousin. “It’s very hard for me to believe that this could happen to such an angelic person,” he said. “Sarah was truly a person with which no-one could find fault and offered warmth to anyone. “She was a dedicated, hard working person who could achieve absolutely anything and we are all very proud of her for starting uni, the first of anyone in our family. “She was a role model to everyone, and has personally inspired me to work harder in my own endeavours.” More on page 3
