During the Nine Days of mourning preceding Tishah b'Av (other than Shabbat), we neither eat meat nor drink wine or grape juice. Two reasons are offered for this practice: 1. Consuming meat and wine is consistent with joy, and may induce joy, and 2. Meat and wine were the staples of the korbanos, and during the Nine Days we mourn the loss of the Temple. One may cook with wine vinegar, as there is no joy in drinking wine vinegar. One may drink alcoholic beverages that are not grape‐based, even though they induce joy. One may eat food which was cooked in meat pots, so long as there is no actual meat in the food, since the korbanos used actual meat. QUESTIONS FOR PARSHAS PINCHAS BY: THE RAV First Aliyah: (25:12) What exactly is a “covenant of peace”? Second Aliyah: If a census had already been taken in Parshas Bamidbar, why was a new census necessary here? Third Aliyah: (26:55) Why couldn’t Hashem have designated each tribe a specified portion in Eretz Israel instead of using a lottery? Fourth Aliyah: (27:15) Why did Moshe ask Hashem to appoint his successor – didn’t he realize that Hashem knew what He was doing!? Fifth Aliyah: (28:3) Why were sheep chosen for the daily Tamid sacrifice, and not, say, goats or bulls? Sixth Aliyah: (29:1) Why does the Torah invoke the mitzvah of Tekias Shofar (Yom Teruah) for Rosh Hashanah, but doesn’t invoke the mitzvos of the other holy days? Even if you have not read the books, come and be inspired. In addition, we will have a general discussion about the format of the BAYT Book Group. The meeting will feature reviews of the following books from our 2014 reading list: “Between Friends” by Amos Oz “September of Shiraz” by Dalia Sofer “Totally Unofficial” by Rafael Lemkin Please join us for a stimulating evening. Even if you have not read the books, come and be inspired. In addition, we will have a general discussion about the format of the BAYT Book Group.
