[email protected] May I move a functioning space heater or electric blanket on Shabbos?
One might view the wiring in such a device as a flame, which is muktzeh. However, many authorities rule that a wire conducting current does not have the same status as a flame. One also might view such a device as muktzeh if it were meant to be stationary, but these devices are meant to be moved.
Therefore, many Ashkenazi authorities permit moving these devices in order to benefit from their heat, so long as one is careful not to unplug them or alter their settings. Sephardic authorities tend to be strict, requiring that one move the heater by pushing it with one’s foot. One may not turn these devices on or off on Shabbos, and one may not adjust their temperature settings. Therefore, some authorities require that the dial and plug be covered or otherwise marked as a reminder not to change or unplug them.
If a space heater is thermostat‐activated, and it is currently off, one should not move it into a colder space such that it will turn on immediately.

QUESTIONS FOR PARSHAS VAYECHI BY: THE RAV
First Aliyah: (48:7) In the middle of explaining to Yosef how Ephraim and Menashe would receive special blessings, Yaakov interrupts to explain to Yosef how Rachel died and how he buried her. Why? Second Aliyah: Why did Yaakov switch Menashe for Ephraim? In light of what happened to Yosef as a result of Yaakov showing preferential treatment to a non‐bechor, was this prudent? Third Aliyah: (48:20) Why did Yaakov say that Israel would bless using the names of Ephraim and Menashe? What makes them more special than all his other progeny? Fourth Aliyah: (49:1) Yaakov begins the blessings by saying that he’d inform his sons of what would happen in the future. But do his next words fulfill that statement? Fifth Aliyah: (49:26) What does Yaakov means when he says that his blessings exceeded his parents’ blessings? Sixth Aliyah: If Yaakov had already arranged with Yosef to be buried in Eretz Yisrael, why did he have to repeat to all his sons the charge to be buried in the Me’aras HaMachepela in Canaan? Seventh Aliyah: Of all the twelve sons, why is only Yosef’s death explicitly documented in Chumash?

NOTICE BOARD NOTICE BOARD NOTICE BOARD SHALOSH SEUDOS
DID YOU KNOW...? Each Shabbos we host hundreds of members and guests for Shalosh Seudos. At the current donation level, it takes at least 4 sponsorships just to cover the costs. Consequently, starting January 10th, 2016, the sponsorship amount will increase to $180 to help offset the costs. Thank you for your understanding and continued support! NOTICE OF REPAIRS
The Clark Street entrance will continue to be closed for another few weeks for remediation work. This area will be out‐of‐bounds to all. We ask that all people entering or exiting the building to please use the South Parking Lot entrance only. In the event of an emergency, please use the fire exits down the stairs at the east and west ends of the second floor lobby to the north of the main sanctuary, and the east and south exits to the south of the main sanctuary.
Please refer to the Emergency Evacuation Cards for more detail.
SAFETY NOTICE For everyone's safety, it is imperative that children either remain with their parents in their respective minyanim or in their appropriate youth program. Please do NOT allow your children to roam the halls. We ask you to take some time to impress upon them the importance of following these directions.
As the weather gets colder, more people will want to bring their strollers indoors. Please note that the only place strollers are currently permitted are in the delivery way (outside the kaylim mikvah area) or outside under the overhang by the parking lot doors. Any strollers found in the hallways will be removed to one of these two areas. We understand that leaving sleeping children in a stroller may more convenient, but they cannot remain in the hallways where they block passage routes.
Thank you for your understanding.
