May I light the menorah and leave my home immediately?
The menorah must remain for at least one half‐hour after nightfall.
From the perspective of fire safety: Having open flames in one's home, and particularly near window curtains, is dangerous (whether or not one is present). One who knows that he will need to leave his home should take special precautions, perhaps by lighting anchored tea lights. If there is no way to safeguard the menorah, one should wait until the minimum time has elapsed and then extinguish the lights.
From the perspective of the mitzvah: Leaving the menorah while it is lit is not ideal; indeed, we emphasize lighting in rooms where we live and function. We wish to see the light and thereby commemorate the miracles we are publicizing, and we wish to rejoice in the mitzvah. Therefore, one ought to remain in the room with the menorah for at least the minimum time, unless he is called away to perform a mitzvah. (Rama Orach Chaim 677:3; Pri Chadash 677:1; Teshuvos v'Hanhagos 1:394; Yalkut Yosef Moadim: Achsanai b'Chanukah 1; Piskei Teshuvos 676:5)
QUESTIONS FOR PARSHAS VAYISHLACH BY: THE RAV First Aliyah: (32:8) Why does the Torah describe Yaakov as having two emo‐ tions: “fear” (“vayeera”) and “pain” (“vayetzer”)? Second Aliyah: (32:15‐16) Why does the Torah deem it important to tell us the nature of Yaakov’s gift to Esav – the type and quantity of each animal? Third Aliyah: (33:5) Esav asked Yaakov about the identities of the women and children he saw; why did Yaakov only respond regarding the children? Fourth Aliyah: (33:16) Why did Yaakov name the place, “Sukkos,” after the barns he had built for his livestock? Fifth Aliyah: (34:13) Why did Yaakov’s sons respond to Shechem’s request to marry Dinah if Yaakov was right there – isn’t it disrespectful to speak before your father? Sixth Aliyah: (35:22)Why is there a parsha break in the middle of this pasuk? Seventh Aliyah: What is the significance of knowing all the names of Seir, Edom and Esav’s descendants? YOUNG PROFESSIONALS CORNER The Young Professionals Kiddush will take place this week, after the Rabbi is finished speaking, in the Morris & Mania Gruda Bais Medrash on the first floor! A donation has been made to the Young Families Committee by Lindsay & Elie Kochman in honour of Gavi’s upcoming 3rd birthday. For more information, or to sponsor a kiddush, please contact Yoel Eis at

SHABBOS DAVENING ENHANCEMENTS In order to improve the Shabbos davening experience for our members, the Shul’s Religious Committee approved the following , effective December 4‐5, at its October 29 meeting:
Streamlining the Shabbos morning minyan in the Main Shul, with the goal of avoiding unnecessary delays during the tefilah and Torah reading. Davening will still begin at 8:45 but Shacharis, Leining and Musaf will likely begin a little earlier. On Shabbos, the ba’al tefilah will lead the davening for Musaf and Mincha from the centre bimah, permitting his voice to be heard more clearly throughout the Shul. A monthly Kabbalas Shabbos, Shabbos Mevorchim, Carlebach minyan during the winter in the main sanctuary. A non‐Carlebach alternative will be available at the same time in a downstairs location. Please contact our Parnas, Howard English,
