PART 5

This is Joshua—a man of courage! _________________________

Today, we conclude the series, Be Courageous…not cautious, complacent, careless or convenient, but courageous! Courage sometimes goes against the winds of our day, against being politically correct. Political correctness has often become a great obstacle to leadership and a stumbling block to conviction. This is not to say we should be insensitive or unconcerned about others. But the obsession with posturing everything to please everybody and offending no one is not social responsibility, it is insanity. The book of Joshua is a book about battles—wins and losses as Israel takes possession of a new land. We read about oppression, resistance and opposition. But in the face of hardship and conflict, Joshua stood firm and tall.

Courage is personal conviction acting, standing and responding without concern for public opinion. ________________________ Read Joshua 24:14-15.

“Now therefore fear the LORD and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” —Joshua 24:14-15 ESV 14

After these things Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being 110 years old. 30And they buried him in his own inheritance at Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash. 31Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua and had known all the work that the LORD did for Israel. —Joshua 24:29-31 ESV 29

God give us men. Men whom the lust of office does not kill, Men whom the spoils of office cannot buy, Men who possess opinions and a will, Men who will not lie, Men who can stand before a demagogue and damn his treacherous flatteries without winking, Tall men, sun crowned, who live above the fog in public duty and private thinking. —J.B. Holland

No Retreat. No Reserve. No Regret. What are the building blocks of conviction? Look at Joshua 24:14-15 again. VISION | God is Real “in your eyes” Vision is how you see life. Too often, men can be short sighted and limited, but not Joshua. He saw and believed in the goodness of God. DECISION | God is Able “choose” SUBMISSION | God is Worthy “serve” PASSION | God is True “will” CONTRIBUTION | God is Faithful Read Joshua 24:29-31. n
