Week 4 mapquest for life Running on Empty “Who’s filling my emotional tank?”

Week 4

Day One

Get Directions:

Psalm 16:7-11

Starting Location

According to David, the psalmist, what role is the Lord playing in his life? “Excuse me; you’re leaking all over the floor.” That was the third person who chose to share that information with Lexi. Of course she was leaking all over the floor. She was transporting water in cracked plastic jugs. Who knew being water girl of the 9th grade girl’s basketball team would be such a difficult job? Lexi just wanted to make some new friends and find a place where she belonged. She never would have agreed to do this job if she had known all the details. She didn’t have the right equipment, she could never keep up with the girls’ demands, and now it looked like the only friend she would be making was Steve, the custodian. Lexi was tired of being alone and her search for a friend was about as successful as moving water in these leaky containers. She had been looking forward to this job being the answer to her problems and instead…”I’ll get towels to clean up this mess Mr. Steve,” she said.

Road Signs

Lexi’s problem is a common one. She just wants someone to care for her and to belong. Inside every one of us is a tank that needs filling. We can go years looking for the right possessions, people or accomplishments to fill this tank only to come up empty in the end.

Ending Location

This week we will look at passages that address that need to be emotionally filled. For many of us the search for a full tank can end when we realize that only God can fill my tank.

Why do you think the Lord makes a better counselor, protector and friend than anyone else you know?

Make a list of the roles that God plays in your life; be specific and use examples.

Verse 32 says “All the believers were one in heart and mind.” What does the rest of the passage say to support that statement?

Week 4

According to verse 33 what were the Apostles receiving?

Road Signs Road Signs

God extended great power and grace to those that understood their possessions were not as important as their relationship with Him. Why do you think this priority (God over possessions) is not more common in our society today?

These verses testify that there was a group of people who were so focused on their relationship with God that they did not need possessions to fulfill them. Do you believe this is realistic? Why or why not?

Ending Location

Look back at your list of possessions that would be hard for you to do without. What roles are these possessions playing in your life today (or, what feelings do they produce)? Can God replace those feelings or roles?

Ending Location

Make a list of your possessions that would be difficult for you to sell or get rid of.

From the Old Testament book of Job, make a detailed list of all the possessions, persons and positions Job lost. Now, using actual verses find the reasons why Job was willing to still follow and worship God.
