Peaks A bove Kaskawulsh Glacier. A fter climbing 8500-foot Vulcan above Slim’s River and the A laska H ighw ay as a reconnaissance, the Q uébecois Bernard Faure, L éopold N adeau and A n d ré Robert returned to W hitehorse to get final permissions. Then under 85-pound packs they ascended Slim’s River for three days to reach the K askaw ulsh Glacier and another day to Base Cam p at the junction of the South A rm and the m ain K askaw ulsh below K askaw ulsh M ountain. T hey set to w ork to climb a 10,000-foot peak west of K askaw ulsh M ountain, which they have officially proposed to nam e “M ount W ayne Sm ith” . They headed up Stairway G lacier which descends to the north on the west side of their peak. T here were weak snow bridges and unstable séracs. A fter many hours they gained the arête, which was icy and covered w ith unstable snow. They reached the top on July 13. A fter the descent by the same route, they returned to cam p after 26 hours. Several days later they ascended the South A rm to climb the 10,000-foot peak southeast of
M ount Stephen Leacock. They gained the col to the west and con tinued over a high point along the ice ridge to the top.
