● Per Scholas is a 501(c)3 national nonprofit organization breaking the cycle of poverty by providing technology education, access, training, career development and job placement for unemployed and underemployed adults.
● Established in 1994, IT job training / workforce development began in 1998. ● Headquartered in the South Bronx, NY; Per Scholas has additional training sites in Columbus, OH, Cincinnati, OH, Dallas, TX, and Silver Spring, MD. A sixth site will open in Atlanta, GA.
● 66 fulltime employees ● Since training began in 1998, more than 5,000 people have been trained for IT careertrack jobs ● Primary support from private and corporate foundations; government grants/contracts, individual donations, income from earned income models (Asset Recovery) are additional funding sources PER SCHOLAS IT PROFESSIONAL TRAINING
● Flagship initiative is IT Support, providing free IT job training to unemployed and underemployed adults (18+) through an intensive, multiweek, instructorled course, along with career development instruction and job placement assistance.
● IT Support students prepare for and complete the CompTIA A+ certification and one or more advanced industry certifications such as CompTIA Network+
● Other course offerings in addition to IT Support include Software Testing and Network Engineer (Network Administration middleskill training in partnership with the community college system). At present, New York only offerings.
● Classes comprised of 2025 adult students and are enrolled on a rolling basis yearround; approximately 700 students trained annually nationwide
● Training is fulltime, Monday to Friday, with four days of handson technical instruction and one day of career development instruction readying students for the professional workforce
● Training is 100% free to participants; the cost for each participant is approximately $6,000 ● 85% of students graduate from the IT training, more than 85% of graduates become industry certified (CompTIA A+ and higher), 80% of graduates obtain employment.
● Graduates average a posttraining starting salary of $29,500; and 75% of working graduates increase their wages after one year of employment
STUDENT BODY DEMOGRAPHICS
● Student body is men and women ages 18 and up ● 90% of our students are people of color, a third are women and a third are disconnected young adults (18 24)
● Onethird are custodial parents ● Twothirds have pretraining personal incomes of $0$5,000 RECOGNITION
