Does everybody get to play? Barrier: Emphasis on Performance There is an increasing focus on high performance in recreation that often influences our ideas and expectations about ability. For example, as youth increase in age, their ability is also expected to increase. Such expectations may serve to exclude many children, youth and adults from recreation. To overcome this, we need to decide on the goals of our programs in relation to the program’s participants. If the goal of a program is high performance, this needs to be clearly articulated to participants at the start. If not, we need to rethink how we provide recreation and reduce the emphasis on performance and ability.
