Personal Interests History Not that stuff the History Channel airs nowadays, aliens and whatnot; the American Civil War, Napoleon’s conquests, the Vinland map, this is real history. I particularly enjoy studying both World Wars and Imperial Colonialism. I highly recommend Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West by Stephen Ambrose as well as Adam Hochschild’s King Leopold’s Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, and Heroism in Colonial Africa.
Genealogy As a history buff why wouldn’t I study my own? Before arriving in America in the late nineteenth century my ancestors left what is now Ireland, Germany, Austria, Poland, and the Czech Republic for various economic and political reasons. My paternal lineage has Norman roots and can ultimately be traced back to Nordic Vikings and includes distant relation to Che Guevara and a medieval knight. Imagine what secrets your family history may hold.
Athletics I grew up playing all kinds of sports: baseball, basketball, football, track and field; heck, I even drag raced for ten years. While I no longer participate in any organized sports I follow my favorite teams fanatically (Go Bears, Cardinals, and Sun Devils!). I also love working out and staying in shape. Laughter may be great medicine, but I think working up a good sweat does an even better job.
