Peru— Cordillera Huayhuash Yerupajá, N orthw est Ridge. D ave W ilkinson and I visited the C or dillera H uayhuash and climbed the northw est ridge of Y erupajá (21,765 fee t). W e reached the sum m it on A ugust 13, the climb having taken us tw o-and-a-half days. It took a further day-and-a-half to traverse the ridge to the col between Y erupajá G rande and Y erupajá Sur and to descend the west face. (Technically this was the first ascent. In 1968 N ew Zealanders Roger Bates and G raem e Dingle climbed the northw est ridge to the top of the north peak. L ater both of them climbed Y erupajá by the norm al route but descended from Y erupajá G rande over the north peak and then descended the northw est ridge. They did not ascend the p art between the north and the m ain summits, but they did descend that section.— Editor. ) R i c h a r d R e n s h a w , A lpine Clim bing Group
