• Assess whether children have learned to phonically decode to the “expected standard”

• Content

• 20 real words and 20 pseudo / “alien” words • 1: 1 with teacher – answers recorded

• Who takes it?

• All children in Y1 • Children in Y2 who did not sit / pass last year

HOW CAN YOU HELP? • Regular reading routines at homes • See and talk about words and meaning in context

• Writing in play • Shopping lists • Magnetic letters / whiteboards • World around them – road signs, billboards

• Games • Draw alien pictures – make up names • Have relaxed fun with it!

Y2 SATS 2016 • First year of New Curriculum testing • More rigorous and demanding in concept and content • New SPAG test for KS1 • New Arithmetic test for KS1 • Standardised scores for each subject • Measure progress within cohort, against county and against national results • 100 = expected standard

2 papers Arithmetic (20mins) Reasoning; 5 questions read aloud, rest of paper written (35mins) Number and Fractions accounts for 80% - 90% of total score

• Reading • 2 reading papers • Question Paper with booklet; 2 short texts with practice questions (30mins) • Question paper with separate answer booklet; 1 longer text (40mins)

• SPAG • 2 papers • Spelling – accounts for 50% of total marks • Grammar and punctuation (20mins)

HOW CAN YOU HELP? • Talk about what you read together • Ask questions using inference and deduction • Ask children to find words the author uses to show character behaviour • Discuss what type of book it is and how you know
