MEAT & BREAD
“We don’t want a museum, man” - client Meat & Bread is located in the recently completed Central Agency Building on Capitol Hill, an adaptive reuse of an auto row building previously converted into a storage facility. Beneath the corrugated metal siding hid a cast -in-place concrete building with large floor-toceiling window openings, old growth timber beams and columns, and open web hip girder trusses, all of which remain intact and became the key elements for us to establish a sense of place. The character of the light-filled north tenant space offered Meat & Bread a nod to their original store location and upheld the brand’s identity. Our design embraced the weathered historical character of the building and highlighted the juxtaposition between new and old, ‘polished’ and ‘rugged’. A Lou Reed quote routed into the back wall provided a hint of harmony.
