PHYSICS Aims: To provide students with an educational experience which will enable them to become confident citizens in a technological world, whether or not they go on to study science beyond A Level. By the end of the course they will be able to recognise the usefulness and limitations of scientific knowledge, understand its relevance as applied to other disciplines and be prepared for employment or further study in Physics, Engineering and related areas. The course will help students develop their skills and attitudes and improve the effectiveness of their communication, their objectivity and their initiative. Details of Course: The Year 12 course develops familiar concepts from GCSE such as mechanics, electricity and waves as well as introducing ideas from modern physics, such as quantum theory. In Year 13 the course builds on knowledge from GCSE and Year 12 and introduces further ideas from modern physics including medical physics and cosmology. A spiral approach to teaching is adopted where areas of study are revisited and built upon to develop an overall understanding. Practical work is an essential part of the course and students are encouraged to consider individual theories within their wider historical and scientific context. ASSESSMENT Level: A-level
