Pictorial Appliqué Workshop

Pictorial Appliqué Workshop The focus of this class is to rethink the traditional appliqué process. I create highly detailed images by creating a pattern – defined by simple shapes and based structure and movement – and, then, allow the printed fabrics to mimic texture, which gives the image a ‘painted’ quality. My applique process is quite extensive. For this three-day workshop, I will be supplying the students with one of my large hummingbird patterns. Each day will bring a new lesson on a specific technique: pattern drawing, the freezer paper appliqué process, fabric selection, stitching, quilting and binding.

It is NOT possible to finish the project in the time we have together, but you will be able to make quite a bit of progress and you’ll have the information you need to continue. Students are encouraged to bring a ‘healthy’ stash to the classroom. A quick Google image search or peruse your own photo library - will aid you in finding a colorful hummingbird image –– one suitable to your own private fabric stash. (And, not to worry, there’s an entire quilt shop just beyond the classroom door!)

Here is an example to illustrate my photo-to-quilt process:
