HANG OUT THE FLAGS Homemade bunting is a huge hit in the homes of crafters, and it’s not just reserved for the outside of your house on Carnival Day. Draped across little ones’ cots (above), or hanging from bedroom walls is a lovely way to introduce colour subtly.

images from all over the web so you can easily keep track of your favourite images and ideas. By simply signing up for an account and adding the ‘Pin It’ button to your bookmarks bar, you can pin any image you come across online to a new board you set up – from ‘Kitchen ideas’ to ‘Scandi’ to ‘Must-haves’ – the site automatically saves and documents the origin. That way, if you pin, say, a gorgeous guest room from somewhere on the web, not only will you have it on file, you’ll have the source of the image only one click away in case you or your followers need more information. It’s worth remembering that anything you pin is public, so it’s not the place for top-secret projects. The number one rule to make the most out of Pinterest is not to just follow your friends. Choose a range of people and blogs that you find interesting, so that you’re constantly being inspired by ideas and themes that suit your individual style. Finding inspiration within the site means organising your feed by finding like minded ‘pinners’. Use the search tool to look for specific themes, colours or trends. If you find a board you like, follow it. Then, in the future, it will come up on your home feed. If you feel unsure of where your design is going, pin everything that takes your fancy and eventually you’ll start to piece together what style and look you want to go for in a room, or even your whole home.

Once you’ve found a selection of people to follow, you’ll be able to start gathering your own pictures for a onestop source of design inspiration. When decorating, it’s a good idea to start with separate rooms and research the different elements you want to change. For example, paint, lighting, wallpaper and flooring. After you’ve finished these you can then pick out separate images from each board to create a mixed one with all your imagery ideas together. The idea for a mood board can come from anything – favourite shapes, fruits, colours, eras. Find an image which you have a natural gravitation towards and work out why you like it and what the elements are that appeal to you. You can always edit your mood board and move things around if you feel like it has lost its way at any point.

Pinterest’s latest feature, ‘buyable pins’, means you can also purchase items you’ve found on the website. Each available product is provided with a price and an option to search for different colours and compare prices from retailers. Some 87% of Pinterest users state that they have bought a product they found on the site. Buyable pins mean your home project can be completed faster and saves you the hassle of trawling lots of high street and department stores.

Working on a collaborative project? The best thing about Pinterest is that you can share your ideas with an architect or interior designer at any stage of your project. Download the app onto your phone so you can carry your Pinterest boards with you and view them while you’re out and about – you can add photos of furniture or accessories you see in shops. Review your boards regularly. If something doesn’t fit, just move the pins to different boards. Use the board as an interior designer would use a mood board and you’ll soon see your projects taking shape.
Be adventurous with the styles of your trinkets and furnishings by searching for unique patterns. Sure, stripes and spots are timeless, but symmetrical shapes inspired by different fruits (bottom) and florals (right) are a talking point in themselves.
