> > Pioneers of Time Without Cartier, watches certainly wouldn’t exist as we know them today. With the maison’s beginnings dating back to the mid-19th century, and a rich history that includes the creation of the world’s first wristwatch, Cartier has always been at the forefront of timekeeping. Today, the legacy of elegant jewelry watches and cutting-edge innovations continue at the Cartier workshops in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The maison presents three of its latest timepieces, all infused with the passion that has earned the brand its well-deserved acclaim among royalty and watch aficionados alike. First up is a unique Cartier combination of two complications, the Ballon Bleu de Cartier Tourbillon with Double Jumping Second Time Zone, available in 18K white gold or 18K pink gold. Designed as a regulator, the 46mm watch features a central minute hand and two jumping hour counters: one to recall home time, and one to tell you the local time. Peering through the skeletonized dial, you can see the perfectly symmetrical and individually
numbered movement. It reveals a portion of the retrograde mechanism, where two fully synchronized but individually adjustable jumping hours are displayed. The first is controlled by the winding crown and set into the side of the case, indicating the starting-point time, and the second is controlled by a push-button mechanism set into the case at the 10 o’clock position, indicating the local time. Within the watch is the mechanical in-house handwound caliber 9456 MC, stamped with the Poinçon de Genève and regulated by a flying tourbillon that takes its inspiration from the capital “C” of Cartier. Each version limited to 50 pieces, the model comes with an alligator strap and is set with a sapphire cabochon in the fluted crown. For intrepid travelers with an eye towards elegant design, look no further than the Ballon Bleu de Cartier Tourbillon With Double Jumping Second Time Zone. For those looking for both refined taste and functionality, there’s the Rotonde de Cartier Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, available in

18K white gold or 18K pink gold. With a diameter of 42mm and fitted on an alligator-skin strap, the elegant watch is a lesson in form meeting functionality. Delve beyond the intrinsic beauty and you’ll find a piece that compensates for the irregularities inherent in the Gregorian calendar, all the while addressing short periods of time. Leap years are always the toughest hurdle for a watch. This one boasts a wheel that completes one revolution every four years, with 48 indentations that detect whether the current month has 30, 31, 28 or 29 days. This translates into a month indicator at 12 o’clock, a retrograde hand that indicates the day of the week at 6 o’clock, and the date is indicated by a hand on the edge of the dial. All three of these calendar displays are controlled by pushers on the case that allow the wearer to easily reset the information in case the movement stops. The Rotonde de Cartier Perpetual Calendar Chronograph features the in-house caliber 9423 MC, a manualwinding mechanical chronograph movement that offers a power reserve of 48 hours. Finally, world travelers must take in the beautiful curves of the Tortue Multiple Time Zone, available in 18K white gold or 18K pink gold. Tortue has a rich history; the watch was introduced in 1912 and has since undergone a series of makeovers and innovations. Its core components remain the same –
striking design and high legibility, with a gorgeous dial boasting a striking blue backdrop that maps out a portion of the globe. As the name suggests, the 51mm x 45.6mm watch goes beyond the standard UTC functionality. The world time watch is able to handle multiple time zones via a mobile disc that bears the names of major cities – appearing in a window cut into the side of the watch’s case The Manufacture caliber 9914 MC is designed to provide information on the Tortue in a clear, straightforward manner. While the time in your current location is clearly displayed by the principal hands, a day/night hand depicting the sun and the moon displays the time at your journey’s starting point. By way of a push-button mechanism at 2 o’clock, the wearer can see the current time, in 24-hour mode, for cities that correspond to the planet’s 24 most commonly used time zones. The Tortue Multiple Time Zone even addresses the change from summer to winter time in countries across Europe on a separate reference scale. With more than 125 years in the field, Cartier continues to innovate and awe with its beautiful and functional timepieces – exemplified by the Ballon Bleu de Cartier Tourbillon With Double Jumping Second Time Zone, the Rotonde de Cartier Perpetual Calendar Chronograph and the Tortue Multiple Time Zone.
