Pisco Oeste, South Face, and Chopicalqui

Pisco Oeste, South Face, and Chopicalqui, Southw est Face. A num ber of new routes have been done on the south face of Pisco in the past few years. It is not altogether clear just w here these routes have been made. M aurice B arrard m ade a route he believes is new in an hour-and-a-half on July 26, 1977. T hat same day Christian Bougnaud and Liliane and A lain Bontemps repeated the same route, w hich followed a central cou­ loir. O n July 29 and 30, 1977 Barrard, Bougnaud and Patrick V allenç ant did a different and direct route on the sam e face. On July 21 and 22, 1977 B arrard and V allençant m ade w hat they called the first ascent of the southw est face of Chopicalqui. Since the southwest ridge is the stan­ d ard route on the m ountain, it is not know n if their route w ent left or right of the ridge. O n June 5, 1978 M arie-José and P atrick V allençant and D om inique A ndré descended the norm al route on skis. A t the end of July V. L ant soloed in two days the north-northeast face of Chopicalqui.
