pixelated chicago squint and you’ll see the big picture

Much like Chicago, the heart of this building may reside downtown but its limbs reach far and wide. By tying the construction to Chicago’s L stations, we can spread the message to communities from Andersonville to Bridgeport, Millenium to Wicker, Pilsen to Paulina. As an extension of the L, this cultural hub simultaneously collects and disperses knowledge and experiences in a language that every race and demographic can understand. The programs created here will not be stagnant ideas confined to one space. They will be as dynamic and diverse as the people who created them and the people they are meant to serve. This proposal works to use an icon of Chicago, the L, to both collect and distribute those stories throughout the city.

Using the planning grid of Chicago as a starting point, the site becomes a field of pixels on which program becomes superimposed. These pixels not only become the language of our building, but are also spread throughout the city as “beacons” to the goingson of the CAF.

Our design calls for repurposing the existing “L” train infrastructure to broadcast througout the city. This connection is emphasized with an literal connection to the nearby L station.
