Led by Don & Jackie Zlaty, CLS, Eden UMC Class Text: Lay Speaking Ministries Basic Course Participant’s Book ADVANCED COURSES (Must complete Basic A and B to attend Advanced Courses ) A1 Let the Whole Church Say Amen! For many people, prayer remains a mystery, and praying in public is a test of faith, left to the “professionals” of the church. Pastor Harris will lead this class in understanding that prayer is one aspect of Spiritual Formation that is expected of the whole church, not only the pastor or worship leader. She will help you grow in confidence and skill in prayer, and in active participation both public and personal. Pastor Harris leads from her deep passion and commitment to “Praising the Lord!” and encouraging her parishioners, as well as all whom she meets to do the same. Class Text: Let the Whole Church Say Amen! should be purchased & read before class. Led by Rev. Rosa Harris, Forest Manor UMC A2 Becoming Accountable Disciples, Part 2 This course presents an understanding of what it means to be part of the household of God, the importance of divine revelation being scripturally-based, a Wesleyan understanding of grace, and the importance of the office of class leader in the development of the Methodist movement. This course will not only help you to look at the faith community to which you belong seeing how it is (or is not) a reflection of genuine Christian community and provide you with tools that will help you to engage in Accountable Discipleship, which you can share to help others engage, also. Class text: Accountable Discipleship should be purchased for this class. This is a continuation of class presented in May, 2012. Pre-requisite: Participants should have completed “Becoming Accountable Disciples – Part 1.” Led by Larna Spearman, CLS, University UMC A3 Preaching 1 This course will focus on issues of Biblical interpretation and theology of preaching, as well as the social and liturgical contexts of proclamation of the Gospel. The history, theology and the role of the sermon in the worship service begin in this class. It addresses the individual “call” to preach and the ”nuts and bolts” of preparing and delivering sermons. Each participant will give a message to the class--followed by discussion and valuable critique. You will: explore the context of preaching, review methods of preaching, consider the importance of Biblical, Christ-centered preaching, discuss the ethics of preaching, prepare a sermon in advance to deliver and evaluate and have fun! Prior to the meeting, please select ONE Scripture lesson and prepare a sermon text to bring to the class. You will deliver the sermon in full and together we will evaluate your sermon, including content and delivery. Please manuscript the sermon, even if you plan to deliver the sermon with only notes or from memory. Practice the sermon so that it is no more than 12 minutes at length. Bring your Bible, the text , Go Preach!, paper and pen/pencil along with your prepared sermon manuscript and/or notes. Please also purchase and read Chapters 1-3, 5, 7, 10 and 11 in the class text, Go Preach! Led by Rev. Chris Roberts, Mt. Olive UMC. Contact him with any questions or for assistance preparing your sermon in advance at [email protected]

A4 Preaching 3: Practicum Rev. Lee has a passion for teaching, “Preaching.” Lay servants will move beyond the basics and address the foundations necessary for preparing engaging sermons. Building on the knowledge and skills of Preaching 1 and 2, this class gives participants skills in developing a preaching plan for “series sermons” to strengthen the church. Participants can expect to preach twice followed by class discussion and critique. Although not used in every congregation, it is highly suggested participants learn to use technology—power-point, etc. in a worship service. Class Pre-requisite: Participants should have completed Preaching 1 & Preaching 2 (including, “From Your Heart to Theirs”) or receive permission at the Discretion of Lay Servant School Director. Class Text: Communicating for a Change Read Part 1. Part 2 will be presented/discussed during class. Bring a Bible, text, pen, paper and a PREPARED SERMON. Led by Rev. Dr. Reginald Lee, Indianapolis Wesley UMC
