1. U. S. Operations Little America Station On January 8, 1957, the Greenville Victory had off-loaded 497 of the cargo destined for Little America and Byrd Stations. The Merrell had offloaded 17% of its cargo and the Nespelen was standing by to off-load 120,000 gallons of aviation gas. Also standing by was the Atka. This operation has been hampered by the disappearance of the bay ice in Kainan Bay on January 1. The USNC-IGY glaciology traverse party consisting of Morency, Anderson, Giovinetto, Bentley, and Ostenso are ashore and have received traverse equipment from the Greenville Victory. They are awaiting cargo from the Merrell. The traverse to Byrd Station is due to leave Little America January 25. Byrd Station On January 8 the reconnaissance party and the first supply traverse returned to Little America. The second supply traverse is being readied with priority cargo. As of January 1, 4 buildings (2, 3 ) 4, and 5) including power and garage, mess hail and barracks had been completed. NAF McMurdo Currently off-loading at McMurdo is the Towle, 49% off-loaded as of January 9. Previously the Nespelen had off-loaded 690,000 gallons of aviation gas. Because of high temperatures, runway facilities for non-ski equipped planes is still unusable. P2V7's are currently being used for

Pole Station operations.

-2Pole Station To date 12 wintering-over personnel are at the Pole Station. These include 4 ICY personnel; Siple, Hough, Guerrero, and Flowers, and 8 support personnel. Most recently, reports indicate that 857 of the station is completed and operative with 6 buildings constructed. Ten per-cent of the ICY air-drop cargo has been delivered and the remaining is due to be dropped as soon as U. S. Air Force planes return to McMurdo from New Zealand. Two P2V7's completed the delivery of 7800 pounds of ICY non-drop delicate equipment. Adare Station As of January 10 all cargo had been off-loaded in the amphibious operation at Cape Hallett, Six thousand penguins of a rookery of an estimated 150,000 have been moved and 4 acres cleared and leveled and 3 buildings erected. Damage to the hull of the Arneb has been temporarily repaired. The Northwind and the Arneb are due to return to McMurdo for further damage evaluation before proceeding to the Knox Coast. If the Arneb proves to be too seriously damaged the Greenville Victory will stand by for transfer of cargo. Weddell Station The Staten Island and the ¶yndot are currently trapped in heavy pack ice in the vicinity of 770 37 S 430 19' W (Gould Bay). Upon entering the Weddell Sea the Staten Island and the Wyandot visited the British station at Halley Bay, the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic traverse station and the Argentine station at Vahsel Bay. On January 1 one helicopter crashed on take-off with no reported injury to crew. II. Status Antarctic Operations Other Nations Australia Early season activity at the Australian Nawson Station has included a projected 400-mile traverse into the interior to explore the limits of the Prince Charles Mountains.
