I hope you have an enjoyable summer time. Polymer Analysis Division (PAD) Goals 2010-11are focused on SPE Proposed Alternative Operating Model (PAOM) and PAD Structure Changes Model (SCM). As Chair for 2009-11, I will be implementing these to make the PAD a more decentralized organization. Two approaches will facilitate these transitions. One is closely following evolution of communication technologies. The other is selection of facilitators who can network academic, industrial, and commercial professionals, who can educate SPE members with science, technologies, and commercialization through SPE events and activities. The PAD can play a corner stone role in these events and activities. During PAD Board Meeting at ANTEC2010, Councilor Patrick T. Mather presented PAD Structure Change Model prepared by our previous chair, Sanjiv Bhatt. The PAD will have five committees: Communication, Awards, Technical Program, Marketing, and Outreach. With the SPE as a whole are facing industry globalization, membership decline, and reduced volunteerism as well as economic uncertainty, We can group these committees together for implementation of two goals. The Communication, Awards, and Technical Program committees focus on the survival of our section, while the Marketing and Outreach committees focus on growth. We need your help to make this work! Best Regards, Harrison Yu Chair 2009-11 of SPE Polymer Analysis Division

I and the Board would like to say thank you tp Albert for his hard work and dedication over the years. Lacking a talented or competent successor, I agreed to take over and manage this for the next few years. So if anyone has suggestions for changes or improvements, technical papers, or photos from PAD activities, please send them to me. Kevin P Menard 800-762-4000 ext 3848

ANTEC 2010 Update The PAD division organized 5 sessions during ANTEC 2010 meeting with 30 talks arranged including 3 keynotes. Except two speakers who were absent, all other talks attracted good attendance. Analyzing the papers for ANTEC 2010, a big portion of the papers are in the area of thermal analysis, characterization of materials’ mechanical properties, composites, and rheology. We have also attracted a good quantity of paper in the area of polymer surface/ interface, which I believe is new for this year. A drop in student participation was noticed compared with the past ANTEC meetings. A call for paper for ANTEC 2011 was distributed during the ANTEC2010 meeting. We contacted with bioplastic SIG, applied rheology SIG, and EPSDIV to have a joint session in ANTEC2011. All showed interest in the collaboration. A reception was held during the meeting. Several persons were interested in reviewing papers for ANTEC2011 and possibly submitting papers. .
PAD’s Best Paper Award for SPE ANTEC 2010 Brief Background This is an annual award made to the authors of the best symposium paper presented in the PAD session of the SPE ANTEC meetings. Each author of the best paper receives a plaque—presented at the next SPE ANTEC .
And this year’s Best Paper is: A596-1 EFFECT OF CONFINEMENT ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYETHYLENE OXIDE IN NANOLAYERED FILMS Chuan-Yar Lai, R.K. Ayyer, A. Hiltner, and E. Baer Center of Layered Polymeric Systems (CLiPS) and Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH 4410
