QUESTIONS TO ANSWER IN THE SESSION: WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, & HOW? Who do we play the ball to? What is the purpose of maintaining possesion? When does a player need to pass? Where is best place to make the pass to when more than one option is available? Why is passing the ball important? How does a player without the ball need to move to support the team in keeping possesion?
VISUAL CUES TO TRIGGER PLAYER RESPONSE: Finding a team mate not marked to make pass to. Player without the ball recognizing they are not in an open position and need to move to create pass option for team mate with the ball.
SESSION NOTES FROM THE COACH: During warm-up emphasize heavily on correct form of making a good pass. Constantly remind players to pick their head up and look before making a pass. Bring up how important it is for a player without the ball to be ready to receive a pass (Principle of attack - 2, Attacking Roles - 2&3 ). Stop the session when you see a player pass the ball and watch, instead of pass and move (Principle of attack - 3). Very important in first small sided game to have players focus on relaxing with ball and feet, and finding the best or easiest pass to make. In expanded small sided and game portion, bring up how important it is for a player to have an idea of where to play the ball next before they receive the ball from a team mate (Attacking Role -1). As session goes along encourage quicker speed of pass play, but not to the point a player is making a bad pass. Let a player know they don't need to panic when they have the ball (Attacking Role -1).
