B efore you begin Read all instructions before beginning project. Do not pre-wash fabrics. Before cutting, press with a dry iron on cotton setting; remove selvages. Use a ¼" seam allowance and sew fabrics with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise noted. Press seams in the direction of the arrows.

Sewing
Flying Geese Unit (Inner Star): 1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of a Fabric E square (2 ½"). Place RST on the left side of a Fabric C rectangle (2 ½" x 4 ½"). Sew on the diagonal line and press open. Fold corner back down, trim seam to ¼" and press triangle open. Place a Fabric E square (2 ½") on the right side of the Fabric C rectangle and repeat the steps as shown in Diagram A. The finished size should be 2 ½" x 4 ½". Repeat to make four Fabric E/C units. Tip: Before cutting, press triangle open and check accuracy – corner should match the one behind it exactly. Dia. A Fabric E 2 ½" x 2 ½"

Geese Unit - Outer Star: 5. Make the Flying Geese Units for the Outer star by following Step 1 and using two Fabric F squares (4 ½") and one Fabric J rectangle (4 ½" x 8 ½"). The finished size should be 4 ½" x 8 ½". Repeat to make four Fabric F/J Units. Refer to Diagram E to make eight more sets of four Flying Geese Units in the combinations shown.

Outer Star: 6. Refer to Diagram F to position four Fabric J squares (4 ½"), four Fabric F/J Flying Geese Units, and one E/C/A Inner Star (8 ½"). With RST, sew the pieces in the rows; press. Sew the rows to each other, nesting the seams; press. The Outer Star should measure 16 ½" square.

Quilt Top: 8. Refer to Diagram H for placement of the Star Blocks. Sew the Star Blocks together by row, carefully matching the points at the seams; press. Sew the rows together, matching the points and seams. The quilt top should measure 48 ½" x 48 ½". Note: Pressing the seams open reduces the bulk at the star point intersections.

Backing: 9. Remove the selvage edges from the two backing rectangle pieces (14 ¼" x 27 ¼") and sew the short edges RST. Pin the sewn piece RST to the 54" edge of the remaining backing piece and sew. Press seam open. The backing should measure approximately 54" x 54". Press backing fabric and finished quilt top. 10. Tape backing, wrong side up to a firm surface. Layer batting and quit top right side up. Baste the layers together with safety pins.

Quilting: 11. Stitch “in-the-ditch” between each block then follow the diagram to stich “in-the-ditch” and through each star center as shown, or quilt as desired. Trim backing and batting even with quilt top. 54" x 54"

Finishing Binding: 12. Remove selvages and sew the short ends of the five binding strips (2 ½" x 42") RST end to end at a 45˚⁰angle to make one continuous strip. Press seams open (Dia. K). Press one short end ¼" to the wrong side. Fold in half lengthwise with wrong sides together; press. 13. Leaving a 2" tail on the folded end, place cut edges of folded binding even with the edge of the quit top and sew, mitering the corners (Dia. L). Overlap ends, trim any excess and finish sewing the binding. Fold Dia. L binding over to back and hand stitch.

Finished Care Instructions
Wash in cold water, gentle cycle. Lay flat to dry or tumble dry on low.
