Precalculus Syllabus Teacher: Ms. Blackmon, Room 402 Email:
[email protected] Purpose of the Course: The purpose of Precalculus is to provide an in-depth understanding of the concepts and mathematic thinking necessary for AP Calculus. The following functions will be thoroughly examined: linear functions, piecewise defined functions, polynomial functions, rational functions, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions. Textbook: Precalculus, McGraw Hill Online access: Go to connected.mcgraw-hill.com Access Code: Grading Policy: ** Tests/ Projects = 60% Minimum of 3 test/project grades per six weeks ** Daily Work/Homework & Quizzes = 40% 15% Daily/Homework, 25% Quizzes Minimum of 10 daily grades per six weeks District Retest/Redo Policy: Once being notified of a test grade of 69 or below, students will have five days to take a retest during tutorials, provided the student fully completed the test originally. The highest grade a student can make on a retest is a 70%. (Note: The score on a retest is not an automatic 70%) The individual teacher may require students to complete additional requirements, such as tutorials, study island assignment, etc. before allowing a retest/redo. If a student fails a homework assignment or a quiz, they will be given an opportunity to improve their grade to a 70%, provided the student fully completed the assignment originally. District Late Policy: Students may turn in work one day late for a maximum grade of a 70%. If turned in two or more days late, the student will receive a 0. District Projects Policy: Projects will be due on or before the due date. If a project is turned in one day after the due date, the maximum grade is a 70%. If a project is turned in more than one day late, it will not be accepted.
Homework: Most of the homework assignments will come from the textbook. They will usually consist of the odd numbered problems. It is due the following day, unless I tell you otherwise. Your homework is usually a completion grade. It is your job to check all of your answers in the back of the book and plan the questions you want to ask when we discuss homework. If you have a question about the homework, you should ask. If you have several questions about the homework, you should see me before or after school for tutoring. Quizzes: If you are absent the day of a quiz, it is your responsibility to come to tutorials to take it. Tests: If you are absent the day of a test, it is your responsibility to come to tutorials to take the test. If you are absent the day of the review, you are still required to take the test the next day. Absences: You are allowed one day extra per day absent to turn in absent work. Please see the Student Handbook for a more detailed explanation of this policy. It is your responsibility to pick up your makeup work; you will not be reminded. If you know you will be absent ahead of time, it is to your advantage to pick up your assignments prior to being absent as well as attending tutorials for assistance. TUTORIALS Tutorials are highly recommended for everyone! There is a sign-in sheet that must be signed when you come to tutorials. Sometimes your teacher is your best resource-come see me! General Classroom Procedures:
When arriving to class, I will greet you at the door. Upon greeting you will show me your homework. (please have it ready) If you do not have your homework, I will make note and message your parent/guardian if this is a pattern. If you were absent, have the assignment due the previous day ready. I will tell you what makeup work to do. Tardies – You will be tardy if you are not in the classroom or in line to submit your homework when the tardy bell rings. No exceptions. Upon entering the room, you will gather your materials (calculator, pencil, notebook, etc.) and have them out and ready to go. You will receive 2 hall passes per semester. They will allow you out of the room to use the restroom, turn an attendance note into the office, go to your locket, etc. They will not cover visiting another teacher during class time. If you have unused passes at the end of the semester, they are worth a total of 15 points on the final exam. If you have one unused pass at the end of the semester, it is worth 10 points on the final exam. You must raise your hand to be recognized. Cheating is putting answers down that are not yours. This includes (but is not limited to) copying someone’s work, copying answers from the internet, using a pencil when we are checking work, letting someone else copy your work, using a cheat sheet for a quiz or test, having someone else’s homework paper, etc. Students will receive a grade of 0, an office referral, and club sponsors/coaches will be notified. No grade is worth cheating over. In the end, you hurt yourself and your classmates. Trust is hard to rebuild. Put your name, the assignment, and date at the top of EVERYTHING you turn in. I can only give you credit for an assignment if I know what it is and to whom it belongs. I shred papers with no name so multiple students can’t try to claim it. ALL WORK MUCH BE SHOWN! Solutions should NEVER just be a single number without some description of how you got that number. No Work = No Credit (NWNC)
