PREQUEL: Breaking through barriers: Peter and Cornelius, Acts 10

A major topic which was tackled in the sermon is that Christ’s church is not defined by national or ethnic boundaries.    

How does Ephesians 2:11-22 relate to church? What are some challenges to having a church that follows the model set out in Ephesians? What are the benefits of a Church that is not defined by one ethnic or national group? What is the significance of the fact that our Brothers and Sisters in Christ around the world are a part of the same Body of Christ? o Have you ever had the opportunity to worship Jesus with people who were of a vastly different cultural background? What did you learn? What was different? What was the same? How does this study of Acts 10, and God’s inclusion of Gentiles & Jews together have relevance for your small group, and Calvary church?

From Acts 10, we learn that “God’s message is for everyone.”     

What stands out to you about God’s commands to Peter in Acts 10? What are some reasons that Peter have given for remaining in Joppa? What barriers existed between Peter and Cornelius? Why do you think Peter was “inwardly perplexed?” (Acts 10:17) Read Acts 10:20. Why would God command Peter to go “without hesitation?” o Compare Acts 10 with the account of Jonah; what are their similarities, and what are their differences?

Could God use you?  

What are some reasons people give for explaining why God could not use them to reach people with the gospel who are culturally different than they are? As you think about sharing the gospel with people you know, what are some of the barriers you might face? (think specifically of the challenges you may experience sharing Christ cross-culturally, and what truth from Scripture can help you move ahead in faith to share the good news). Have you ever seen God use you, or someone you know in an unexpected, and exciting way to reach culturally diverse people with the good news about Jesus? Do you know the gospel message well enough to articulate it when God gives you the chance to share?
