By earning this significant recognition, GILT joins an elite group of 69 restaurants worldwide and becomes one of only seven dining establishments in New York City to have been awarded the magazine’s highest honor. “I suppose my relentless pursuit of Wine Spectator’s Grand Award can be traced back to 2001 when I was fortunate enough to be a part of another Grand Award-winning team at a celebrated Manhattan restaurant,” says Wine Director Patrick Cappiello who oversees the 3,000 bottle list. “Since then, I have made it my personal goal to create a wine program that would be equally deserving of this recognition,” he adds. “Now more than ever, this validates GILT as a modern day wine destination in New York City and our entire team is so thrilled to have earned this prestigious honor.” Cappiello currently offers personalized wine tastings on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in GILT’s parlour, located just beyond the restaurants antique wood-paneled doors in the historic Villard Mansion. “Pours with Patrick,” priced from $100, $250 or $500 per person, may be reserved for parties up to four at 6:30 or 9:30 pm. Prior to arriving at GILT, Cappiello will speak with guests to gain an understanding of specific grape and regional preferences, enabling him to best craft a customized tasting experience. The Grand Award is Wine Spectator's highest honor for excellence in restaurant wine selections. The magazine says the award is "given to restaurants that show an uncompromising, passionate devotion to their wine program.” These restaurants typically offer 1,500 selections or more, and feature a serious breadth of top producers, outstanding depth in mature vintages, large-format bottles, and superior organization, presentation and wine service." Each winner has passed a thorough onsite inspection which included an evaluation of the restaurant’s wine program, storage, service, cuisine and ambiance.
