An operator in North Dakota’s Bakken unconventional oil play used rod lift in a horizontal well. The well experienced gas slugging and parting of rods multiple times in a 1-year operating period. The well produced 120 BOPD and averaged 742 gas-to-oil (GOR) ratio. The parting of rods resulted in multiple workovers and lost production. The operator was looking for an alternative production method to produce low-volume wells and approached Baker Hughes Artificial Lift Systems for a solution. The operator asked Baker Hughes to design an electrical submersible pumping (ESP) system capable of operating in low-volume, high GOR downhole environments at approximately 8,757-ft pump setting depth (PSD). A Baker Hughes account manager met with the operator, reviewed economic requirements, and discussed flexible commercial models offered with a ProductionWave™ solution. The operator chose direct sale, and experienced field personnel

installed the ProductionWave solution. The FLEXPump™ series pump, as part of the solution, mitigates turbulence to prevent cycling and gas locking, balances thrust to reduce pump wear, and handles solids while avoiding plugging. Gas slugs are typically problematic for rod pumping systems. This solution was developed specifically for high gas, low-flow applications, which are common in the Bakken formation. The ProductonWave solution increased uptime and eliminated rod lift failures. As demonstrated in the graph above, once the ProductionWave solution was installed, production immediately increased. This was credited to FLEXPump technology, EXCLUDER2000™ sand screen, and the Vision™ real-time monitoring service as part of the ProductionWave solution. The solution lowered pump intake pressure (PIP) by 418 psi and increased production 71%. This increased production resulted in a monthly revenue increase of USD 255,000 and led to the operator’s order for additional ProductionWave systems.
