NCAA rules permitt basketball and football student-athletes to enter the draft once during their career without jeopardizing eligibility in the sport, if the student-athlete is not drafted by any team and declares an intention to return to LQWHUFROOHJLDWHDWKOHWLFVZLWKLQDVSHFLÀHGSHULRG of time. However, the rules do not allow these studentathletes to sign with an agent and regain their eligibility. Both sports have restrictions on how student-athletes can get this one-time exception. Work with the panel to guarantee eligibility.

VIOLATIONS OF THESE RULES JEOPARDIZE ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY!

WHAT’S A RUNNER? Runners are used by agents to be the “inside track” to signing the student-athlete to a representation contract. Runners are usually individuals who start out trying to “just be your friend.” The runner can be anyone, male or female, current or former student, and even an old high school friend. Runners may eventually offer rides, meals, clothing, and seem like a good person.

You can be certain that every dime the runner has spent in “recruiting” the studentathlete on behalf of the agent has been well documented, and you will likely be required to repay that cost once you are signed by the agent. There is “no free lunch,” even in the world of professional athletics.

MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION Don’t be afraid to ask the tough questions! The PSCP, coaching staff, scouts, and professional teams and leagues are available resources to student-athletes and parents. Utilizing the PSCP and its services will assist the student-athlete in making the best decisions for his/her professional career.
