PROGRAM UPDATE A publication of Cornell University Cooperative Extension - Warren County
September 2014
Family and Consumer Sciences Eat Smart New York’s (ESNY) goal is to promote health by helping low-income individuals establish healthy eating habits and a physically active lifestyle. As the program year comes to a close, following are some of its successes:
2,363 residents of Warren County participated in an ESNY! program this year through direct and indirect program lessons. Lessons topics included increasing fruits and vegetables, reducing sweetened beverages, increasing physical activity, eating healthy on a budget, nutrition label reading, reducing sodium and identifying whole grain products.
Direct education venues included grocery stores, Head Start, community health centers, worksites, adult education and training centers, faith based centers and community meeting places.
Indirect programming was provided at emergency food assistance sites, farmers’ markets, public schools, summer recreation programs, WIC (Women Infant Children), public housing, community fairs and events.
Of the youth that participated in the Choose Health programs, 11% indicated that they improved the frequency of fruits and vegetables consumed; 4% decreased sugary beverages; and 21% increased their physical activity as a result of the program.
A new program “Cooking Matters At The Store” began mid-year with support from Wal-Mart and CCE Thompkins County. The program is an interactive grocery store tour that teaches families and individuals how to shop for healthy, affordable food on a budget and how to stretch SNAP and WIC benefits.
A teaching garden at the East Field Community Garden provided staff with an opportunity to meet SNAP recipients and SNAP eligible residents in a neighborhood setting. Produce was used for ESNY cooking demonstrations and the excess donated to local food pantries.
The opportunity to provide programs in local public schools grew this year with the Choose Health program and collaboration with the 4-H Youth Development program area. Ninety-two youth between the ages of 812 participated in the Choose Health program which incorporates healthy eating practices with physical activity.
Staff provided 220 indirect lessons to consumers of the Glens Falls Farmer’s Market, Chestertown Farmer’s Market and the North Creek Farmer’s Market.

4-H Youth Development
Hunter Education programs were held on September 7th at Washington County Coon & Cat Club with 6 youth & 1 adult. The Sportsman Education Weekend held September 13th & 14th had over 185 participants. A final program is being offer to Hadley-Luzerne Central School on Sunday September 28th at Stony Creek Rod & Gun.
The Warren County Fair Committee held a wrap up meeting on September 16 and felt that though smaller in scale, the Fair accomplished a youth-based outreach for 4-H that attracted youth participation and promoted individual projects and activities. The group will not actively seek a partner for 2015.
The staff has met with one new club, The Nature Club from Olmstedville, and one established club, the Combs/Conine club to get them up and running. The new club already has five enrolled members and two trained volunteers. All other clubs have contacted by email and will receive a follow up call to determine their status. Roxanne will be taking the lead in club management duties and 4-H marketing.
The 4-H program has adopted a new, PW Wood approved re-enrollment packet that reduces four pages of materials and signatures into one tri-fold packet that requires only two sets of initials, one youth signature, and one parent/guardian signature to cover acknowledgement of risk, code of conduct, enrollment, photo release, & permission slip. All currently enrolled 4-H members received a re-enrollment packet this week with a deadline for return on November 30th to qualify for trips and activities.
The Spartan Strong program will begin this week and has Abby working Monday through Thursday at the Queensbury Intermediate building for Nutrition Education for two groups in six session blocks.
Extended School Day started on Friday, September 19th and will continue to conduct outdoor/ environmental education for grades 3-5 and 6-8 on Friday afternoons. The goal for this year is to get the youth off the campus for some experiential learning at local environmental sites.
North Warren Central School has nearly completed basic archery for its 7th & 8th Grade classes during physical education held Mondays through Thursdays 10 am until noon. This creates 56 new 4-H members that are paid for by the school at a reduced rate. The school will also be working with Abby on Choose Health in the 5th grade and one of the staff on 6th grade team building/adventure games.
