Workshop: DIY Laundry-to-Landscape Installation (Petaluma, CA) July 27, 2013 9am-4pm
Managed event outreach; media and partner relations; registration; and logistics for a day-long, handson, Laundry-to-Landscape greywater workshop. The workshop was geared towards producing the installation of new residential greywater systems and covered current code requirements, inside and outside parts assembly, proper plant selection and site and landscape distribution system design. Experienced greywater installers were on-hand to ensure code compliance, answer questions and help troubleshoot. Forty-seven participants attended the workshop. Site visits, site evaluation and support was offered in advance of the workshop to ensure that sites were appropriate and homeowners were properly prepared for their installations. Instructors for the course, Christina Bertea and Christopher Reamer, are two of the Bay Area’s premier greywater experts.
“Thanks for putting on a great workshop! Hands-on learning works really well for me- so when we started putting the parts together I really connected the dots!”— Petaluma greywater workshop participant (7/27/13) I had looked at these systems online, but coming to the workshop and getting to feel the parts and get my questions answered has really empowered me to install one! — Petaluma greywater workshop participant (7/27/13) Installation: Greywater system installation support (Petaluma, CA) July 28, 2013 10am-1pm
Petaluma residents were supported in their installations by site visits from experienced installers and contractors.

Learnings 2013 was our 6th year working on greywater education and installations with non-profit, business and municipal partners. In that time, we’ve been able to collectively affect a sea change, both locally and within the state of California in regards to greywater awareness, installations and policy change. Greywater awareness has reached a tipping point and the challenge now is to turn that awareness into significant numbers of home-scale greywater systems installed.

[email protected] There are several areas of both opportunity and challenge yet to be explored in order to fully realize the potential of our programs to influence individual behavior change and to integrate a water conservation ethos more fully into people’s daily lives. The areas identified that need further development were: Longer than anticipated evolution from exposure and education to installation of greywater systems, lack of confidence in ability to complete an installation, issues with site appropriateness for greywater system installation and further assessment of needs and impacts. An ongoing challenge is the amount of time it takes to pre-screen participants for the workshops to achieve a higher ratio of systems installed to participants attending. In an effort to increase the number of systems installed, streamline the process and make the program more cost effective, Daily Acts is reworking the format of both our greywater talks and our workshops. Future greywater talks will provide a general overview of the types of greywater systems, including the opportunities and limitations of each. The talk will also covers codes, best practices and basic designs. Participants will leave the talk with a clear understanding of whether they are ready to proceed with a greywater system installation and which greywater system is suitable for their home. Workshops will focus on hands-on education with practical skill-building instruction for participants who are ready to install the simple and cost-effective Laundry-to-Landscape greywater system. The primary focus of the workshop is on system design and installation. Workshop participants will leave the workshop with the knowledge and skills to install a Laundry-to-Landscape greywater on their own property.
