Program Description: The presentation will cover the ongoing transformation of Cincinnati’s riverfront from an industrial zone at the river’s edge containing warehouses, railroad yards, freeway ramps, parking lots, and Riverfront Stadium to a mixed-use neighborhood called The Banks, which includes residential, office and retail development, The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, two stadia, and a new 45-acre riverfront park. The presentation will highlight the challenges of planning, designing, and constructing a new 20-acre neighborhood from scratch within the Ohio River floodplain, including elevating the development above the 500-year flood level, constructing a new elevated street system with utilities, and connecting the neighborhood back across a major freeway to Cincinnati’s central business district, as well as to the river. The program will also examine the 6000-car shared parking and intermodal transportation facility which not only serves the neighborhood, stadia, and adjacent CBD, but also serves as the structural base for the buildings of the neighborhood and elevates the neighborhood above the floodplain. Lastly, the presentation will touch on the complex phasing requirements of building such a large urban project over a 20-year period, through a major recession and other tough economic times.
Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be able to identify the key components of a mixeduse neighborhood and will learn about the challenges of planning and constructing a 20-acre neighborhood, in phases, over a 20-year timeline. 2. Participants will learn about the coordination and integration of programs from the many stakeholders involved with the riverfront development. 3. Participants will learn about shared parking facilities and their benefits for mixed-use neighborhoods. 4. Participants will learn about the challenges of building in a floodplain and about the complexities of constructing a neighborhood on top of a garage structure. Learning Objectives
