Promotional Activities, Donations & Speaking Engagements

Promotional Activities 

May be conducted by CU, Pac-12 Conference or a “noninstitutional charitable, educational or nonprofit agency”



Internally:  Student-athletes sign Promotional and Charitable Activities Form at 1st team meeting in August which allows CU to use the SA’s name, image and likeness for promotional purposes.  Must complete Promotional Activities Request Form (cubuffs.com/ComplianceCorner) and submit it to Rachel Ripken 2 weeks prior to each requested event.

Promotional Activities 

Student-athletes may be invited to help promote or participate in events for external charitable, educational or nonprofit organizations  Must

complete Promotional Activities Request Form and submit to Rachel Ripken 2 weeks prior to each requested event.

 Receive

approval prior to the event

 The

specific activity or project may not involve co-sponsorship, advertisement or promotion by a commercial agency

 SAs

name, image or appearance may not be used for commercial purpose

 Any

funds raised from the activity must go directly to the organization

Promotional Activities 

Student-athletes may not miss class to participate



May receive actual and necessary expenses related to their participation in the activity or event  Including



transportation

No gifts or honorarium

Donations 

CU and CU Athletic Dept. staff members cannot make any type of donation that will directly or indirectly benefit prospect-aged individuals (regardless of their athletic status).



CU can provide a donation (up to $100) to a charity on behalf of a PSA or other “reasonable tokens of support” in the event of death of PSA or death/life-threatening illness of a PSA’s family member 

After PSA signs NLI, FAA or provides financial deposit to CU in response to offer of admission

Donations 

An institution, coach/staff member or booster may contribute to a nonathletically related bona fide youth organization that includes PSAs and non-PSAs, provided the assistance:  Is

not earmarked for a particular PSA

 Is

not earmarked for the purpose of contributing to a boys’ basketball program

 Is

offered in conjunction with the organization’s regular fund-raising activities

Donations 

CU may not provide athletics equipment to a high school.



However, CU may provide athletics equipment to bona fide youth organizations that may consist of some PSAs, provided the equipment is issued in accordance with CU’s regular policy regarding the discarding of equipment. 

YMCA

Donations 

CU may donate used athletic equipment to a nonprofit foundation established to distribute such equipment to high schools, provided the request for such donations is initiated by the foundation and CU has no part in selecting the high schools that receive the equipment.



CU may provide nonathletics equipment (e.g., a computer) to a high school, provided there is no athletics department involvement and the equipment is not used to benefit only the high school’s athletics program

Speaking Engagements Sports other than Football or Basketball: 

Except during a Dead Period, a coach may speak at a meeting or a banquet at a high school or at an event at which PSAs are in attendance outside or during a Contact Period without using a contact or evaluation, provided:  The

meeting or banquet is initiated and conducted by the educational institution or the outside entity;

 The

coach does not make a recruiting presentation in conjunction with the appearance;

 The

coach does not have direct contact with any PSAs (or PSA parents/legal guardians) in attendance, and

 The

coach does not engage in any evaluation activities.

Hardship Waivers

Hardship Waiver 

Used if a student-athlete suffers a season-ending injury or illness:  Prior

to the first competition of the second half of the season, and

 Prior

to the student-athlete participating in more than three contests or dates of competition or 30% of the season – whichever is greater



Only competitions against outside participants, excludes exempted scrimmages and exhibitions.



Competitions are counted through the conference championship or a “last chance” event, not the NCAA Championships.

Hardship Waiver 

A student-athlete who uses a season of competition may be granted a hardship waiver even if he/she subsequently participates in the nonchampionship segment – so long as the injury/illness occurred during the championship segment and resulted in the SA’s incapacity to participate for the remainder of the championship segment  Volleyball

Medical documentation of injury or illness must come from a physician who administered care at the time of the injury/illness  Documentation

from individuals other than physicians (e.g., physical therapist) may be used to support the physician’s documentation



Petition is filed with the Pac-12 Conference



If approved, the student-athlete is granted an additional season of competition as a result of his/her injury or illness. 

The student-athlete must have time remaining on their five-year clock.

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-129: Media Activities Adopted – Effective 8/1/2017 

To establish consistent regulations governing student-athlete participation in media activities both during and outside the playing season



Student-athletes cannot miss class to participate in media activities during or outside the playing season. Exception for conference sponsored media day is still applicable.

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-130: Retroactive Financial Aid Adopted – Effective 8/1/2017 

Institutional financial aid may be awarded to an enrolled studentathlete after the first day of classes in any term may be made retroactive to the beginning of that academic year.



If provided during first year of enrollment at CU, must be a multiyear award. If provided 2nd year or after, can be one-year only. (Pac12 Rule)

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-131: Meals in Conjunction with Away-From-Home Competition Adopted – Effective 8/1/2017 

To specify that on each day associated with an away-from-home competition, an institution may choose to provide student-athletes with regular meals (or allowances) at the institution's discretion

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-132: Nutritional Supplements – Protein Adopted – Effective immediately 

Add protein as a permissible class of nutritional supplements 

30% calculation no longer applicable.

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-133: Benefits and Expenses – Entertainment Adopted – Effective 8/1/2017 

To permit an institution, conference, or the NCAA to provide reasonable entertainment to student-athletes



20-hour weeks and 8-hour weeks

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-134: Expenses for Practice and Competition – Other Competition Adopted – Effective immediately 

An institution may provide, during an academic year in which a student-athlete is eligible (or the following summer), actual and necessary expenses related to participation in: 

1) Elite level championship events (e.g. The Olympic Games or National Championship events) or the junior-level equivalent (e.g. Youth Olympic Games); and,



2) Established regional championship events (e.g. North American Championships)

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-135: Prohibition on Required Athletically Related Activities – Eight Hour Period between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Adopted – Effective 8/1/2017 



Required Athletically Related Activities (“RARA”) other than competition shall be prohibited during a continuous eight-hour period between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Required Athletically Related Activities shall be prohibited during an eight-hour period after release of student-athletes following a home contest that ends after 9 p.m., or return to campus from an away-from-home competition after 9 p.m. 

Travel is excepted

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-135: Prohibition on Required Athletically Related Activities – Eight Hour Period between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Adopted – Effective 8/1/2017    

If practice ends at 9 pm, practice may begin at 5 am the following day. If practice ends at 10 pm, practice may begin at 6 am the following day. If home competition ends at midnight, practice may begin at 8 am. If the team returns to campus at 2 am following away competition, practice may begin at 10 am.

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-136: Additional Days Off During the Academic Year Adopted – Effective 8/1/2017 

Required Athletically Related Activities are prohibited for a sevenday period beginning the day after a student-athlete’s (or team’s) last contest of the season



An institution shall provide a student-athlete with an additional 14 days off during or outside the playing and practice season during the regular academic year

Travel to and from away-from-home competition

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-136-1: Additional Days Off – Return Travel Exception Adopted – Effective 8/1/2017 

Travel that occurs as part of an institution’s return to campus following away-from-home competition between midnight and 5 a.m. may be considered as a day off 

If the team returns between midnight and 5 am, the institution must provide a continuous 24-hour period free from required athletically related activity following release from the return travel in order for it to count as a day off.



If the team returns from away competition at 6 am, this cannot be counted

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-136-2: Additional Days off – Life-Skills Activities Exception Adopted – Effective 8/1/2017 

Required life-skills activities that involve multiple sports and are formally organized by the athletics department are permitted on a student-athlete’s off day



Key term here is MULTIPLE SPORTS – not sport specific.

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-137: Student-Athlete Time Management Plan Adopted – Effective 8/1/2017 

An institution shall develop a student-athlete time management plan for each sport



The institution shall conduct an annual end-of-year review of each sport’s time management plan  The

findings of each review shall be reviewed by the intuition's President or Chancellor

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-138: Required Days Off – Preseason Practice and Vacation Period Adopted – Effective 8/1/2017 

An institution shall provide student-athletes with one day off per week during a preseason practice period and during a vacation period when classes are not in session

Legislation Update Proposal 2016-139: Off-Campus Practice During a Vacation Period Adopted – Effective 8/1/2017 

Off-campus practice unrelated to an away-from-home competition is prohibited during an institutional vacation period outside the institution’s championship playing season
