Proofreading Checklist You will have plenty of occasions throughout your academic career when you must write answers rather than type them. Handwriting doesn’t need to be perfect, but it does need to be neat enough for teachers to understand. Make copies of this Tip Sheet. For final drafts of important papers, check off each item as you proofread. Check as Reviewed

Letters finished properly   

Crossed all “t”s and dotted all “i’s” Closed all letters, especially a, d, b, p and q Lower case letters half the size of upper case letters Spacing 

White space the size of a lower case letter separating each word All letters and periods sitting on the line, not “floating” between lines Paragraphs indented one inch

 

Capitalization and punctuation   

First letter of every sentence capitalized Proper nouns begin with a capital letter Appropriate punctuation at the end of every sentence Proper placement of quotation marks and punctuation within quotation marks

 Spelling   
