proceeded to wage incessant warfare on neighboring clans—and eventually each other.

On the first day of the trip, meet your Backroads Trip Leaders at 11:30 a.m. at the Avignon TGV train station. (Gare Avignon TGV; this is NOT the Avignon Centre train station. If you arrive at Avignon Centre, you’ll need to take a 15-minute taxi ride to the Avignon TGV station.) Look for a Trip Leader (wearing a Backroads T-shirt) in front of the main entrance to the TGV station (sortie nord), next to the bus parking area. Please arrive dressed in your biking clothes and bring a daypack with your rain gear and anything else you may want for today’s ride.

Leaving Les Baux, make your way over the Alpilles hills. If you so choose, stop at the impressive Cathedral of Images. This ambitious multimedia exhibit space is situated inside a large stone quarry and celebrates the world’s greatest artists. After your visit, pedal onward to St-Rémy, a bustling Gallo-Roman village with cheery cafés and treelined boulevards. This historic artists’ haven has hosted its share of famous names over the centuries: Nostradamus was a native St-Rémois; Albert Schweitzer recuperated here in 1917; and Gertrude Stein made this her home for several years. Settle into your room at our elegant villa-style hotel, Le Vallon de Valrugues. Tonight we gather for a welcome reception on the terrace before enjoying our first dinner together at the hotel’s excellent restaurant. Lodging: Le Vallon de Valrugues & Spa

Shuttle to the Alpilles 1 Hour St-Rémy Route 16 Miles (200’ elevation gain)

Bienvenue en Provence! After meeting we shuttle to the Alpilles region, where we enjoy an olive oil tasting and light picnic lunch. Then your Backroads Trip Leaders fit your bike and give a brief talk on biking techniques and safety before you head out on two wheels into the beautiful Provençal countryside.

Day 2

Biking Options: Robion Route: 28 Miles* (700’ elevation gain) Oppède-le-Vieux Route: 32 Miles* (1,500’) Bonnieux Route: 40 Miles (2,800’)

Our first stop is Les Baux, perched on a rocky plateau above the Val d’Enfer (Valley of Hell), an eerie limestone landscape dotted with caves and said to be frequented by witches and goblins. There’s time to explore Les Baux, with its charming old houses, winding narrow lanes and the ruins of a castle “dismantled” in the 1600s by order of Cardinal Richelieu. In the Middle Ages, this spot was home to the Seigneurs des Baux, self-proclaimed descendants of Magus Balthazar (one of the Three Wise Men), who erected fortifications and

After breakfast begin biking through the limestone hills of the Alpilles, blanketed with garrigue, the wild herbes de Provence whose distinctive fragrance fills the air. In Eygalières, grab an espresso at our favorite café. You might also want to pick up something at the bakery or at one of the cafés to take with you for lunch—it’s the perfect day to stop for a picnic beneath the pine trees or near a fountain in one of the towns along the route. Back in the saddle, set your wheels toward the dramatic limestone peaks of the Luberon Range. To start off, join the Route de Jean Moulin, a scenic road bordered by pines, vineyards and quintessential Provençal scenery. After crossing the Durance River, bike through Cavaillon, France’s melon capital. (The melon is such an important commodity here, Cavaillon even has a Brotherhood of Knights of the Order of the Melon!) Continue through several tiny villages, including Robion, Oppède-le-Vieux and Ménerbes, which cling to the side of the Petit Luberon and blend into the rocky landscape.

Climate

Of course, we also recommend extending your stay at any of the hotels we visit on this trip; see the accommodations sidebar for details.

Provence is known for its sunny and relatively mild climate. However, July and August are usually quite hot, and humidity is often high in June and September. Rain is possible year-round—don’t forget to bring waterproof, breathable rain gear. The Mistral, Provence’s famously strong wind, can whip up at any moment, so come prepared with a windbreaker and warm layers. Please see “Suggested Packing List” for more recommended clothing and gear.

Refer to the Hotel Room Rate Guide for starting doubleoccupancy rates. Note that the chart reflects the internet and/or best available rates, which were accurate at the time of printing, but hotel rates are always subject to change. Also be aware that some hotels may require a minimum stay. We recommend that you consult directly with the hotels for specific details, as these requirements can change depending on the season and time of the week. Book early, especially during peak travel season!
