Proverbs Play Love Your Enemy Inspired from Lesson 10 of Wordly Wise Book 4

Skylar remembered the night she became an orphan. The pain of knowing that she would never see her parents again was almost too much to bare. There was no way she could ever regain them. For they were slayed by a group of people who hated Christians. Sadly, many of the Christians in her town had experienced the same misfortune.

As the murderers burned her house down, they clearly communicated to Skylar that she was banished from their town.

She did not fight back as she cowered away from the murderers .

With no livelihood, Skylar decided to become an indentured servant and travel to America to start a new life.

Some of her friends tried to console her. They wanted her to stay and live with them.

She deliberated a long time before she finally decided that she should leave her friends and travel to the new world. Skylar’s friends knew that this was not a precipitous decision and they supported her choice to leave.

The depth of her love and her desire for God was greater than the pain she felt towards the murderers.

She knew that the murderers’ evil act was symptom of them not having God in their hearts.

She read in the Book of Matthew (5:44-45, 6:1315) that it was God’s desire for her to love her enemies and pray for those murderers who persecuted her and her family. She knew that it was for her own heart’s healing that she needed to forgive those murderers who killed her parents.

So, she forgave them. It was hard, very hard. She would not let their act of hatred destroy the love that was in her heart. She had to forgive them to receive the consoling that her heart so desired.

Her misfortune and her complete dependence on God for her livelihood helped strengthen the depth of love inside of her. She was not going to cower away from the challenges facing her.

As they came closer to the new world, Skylar starting feeling safer.

When she landed in America, she started communicating with the other indentured servants. Soon she began regaining new friends.

Two other indentured servants adopted Skylar as their own child. The depth of their love for her grew every day.

One day when Skylar came home, her adopted parents looked as if something ailed them. They acted so strange and quiet. They asked Skylar to sit down and they said, "Skylar, we love being your adopted parents. When we met you, we thought you were an orphan. So we adopted you.”

“What we are trying to communicate to you is that we are no longer going to be your parents.” Skylar said, "Why? What did I do wrong! Why don't you want me?"

“It is not us. It is your real parents, who love you more than you could ever imagine. Your parents were not slayed as the murders told you. They were held captive and tortured, but they escaped. They have been looking for you ever since.”

When Skylar met her parents, she was filled with great joy. That day she had regained her parents. Yet, she was sad that she had to leave her adopted parents.

Her parents told her how much they loved her and how happy they were to have her back. Then they shared with her their plans of moving next door to her adopted parents. That way she could visit them anytime.

They all rejoiced together.

That night, as Skylar's mother tucked her in bed and stoked her long hair, she asked, “How did dad and you get away from the murderers.” Her mother had tears in her eyes as she said, “Your dad and I shared with one of the murderers about God’s love for him and he accepted God’s love and forgiveness in his heart and he let us go. Now, he is a missionary.”

“Mom.” said Skylar, “I did what God asked me to do and I prayed for those murderers. I never knew that God was going to use my prayer to change that man’s heart. That prayer help save your lives and turn a man from being a murderer to a faithful missionary.” “Mom, what was that person’s name? I want to continue to pray for him.”

“His name is Paul, some have nicknamed him, Apostle Paul.” “Skylar, my child, I am so proud of you! You are not only my child, but you are a child of God. For Jesus said, ‘44 …love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! 45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven.’ ” (Matthew 5).
