Mission: In keeping with the goal of the Northwestern University Department of Athletics and Recreation to provide our student-athletes with a world class experience, the mission of the NU P.R.I.D.E. Program is to help our students find personal success through service to the campus and their community while enhancing their leadership skills, celebrating diversity, and promoting studentathlete welfare through meaningful programming.
With two representatives from each of the 19 varsity teams, the mission of this NCAA sponsored program is to serve as a vehicle to promote communication between the athletic administration and student-athletes at Northwestern by providing a student-athlete voice within the department, discussing issues and concerns, and providing feedback as necessary. S.A.A.C. also serves in a leadership role recruiting fellow student-athletes to serve the campus, Evanston, and the surrounding area through a variety of community service programs and events. Further, it is our privilege and responsibility to enhance the relationships between the Athletic Department and all other realms within Northwestern University. Peers Urging Responsible Practices through Leadership & Education With representation from each of the 19 varsity teams (approx. 50 mentors/year), Mentors participate in various training sessions throughout the academic year. These prepare mentors to answer questions about various campus resources as well as have the ability to refer other student-athletes to respective offices when necessary. Trained peer mentors help prevent teammates from experiencing problems or other negative consequences. Peer mentors will learn about the warning signs of eating disorders, depression, and alcohol abuse in order to intervene appropriately then refer to professional staff. Mentors prevent student-athletes from violating policies related to alcohol and other drug use through education and intervention. Mission: With full participation from all first-year student-athletes, the purpose of the F.Y.E. program is to educate student-athletes on how to successfully navigate both NUDAR and campus resources while providing an opportunity to network with university faculty, staff, and administration. The F.Y.E. program also serves as a forum for studentathletes to discuss and learn about the various realms of campus life. F.Y.E. In collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, the purpose of Engage is to create a more inclusive campus culture within the community of student-athletes through constructive conversations and meaningful programming. In an effort to encourage engagement with the larger campus community, the Engage program will highlight one event each quarter that is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.
Mission: To cultivate world class leaders by inspiring students to actively engage in their leadership development. The vitality of this program emerges from workshops that consist of inspirational testimony, world renowned professionals, experiential learning, and reflection, all of which serve to challenge Northwestern Student-Athletes to explore, define, master, and live leadership.
