Simple Sets of 5 Questions

I was CIAT’s principal resource person, preparing and arranging all farmer meetings and trainings, and identifying local experts from BUMBULI Council to conduct demonstrations on compost manure in Mbuzi and Milungi villages. Although I had received information before going to Lushoto, I would have liked to receive the information at least 2 weeks prior to the visit.

Before implementing the composting demonstration in Lushoto in November 2014, did you receive information from CIAT on the learning sessions (objective, methodology used to learn about compost manure and agenda)?

Q2 Yes

Were you involved in the design of the demonstration in Lushoto in November 2014 (i.e. in terms of the objectives or methodology) for farmers to learn about manure compost? Among my responsibilities as project implementer was to identify farmers who would be able to arrange materials for demonstrations, to let the village leaders know that there would be demonstration training occurring in their village and to inform the district department. I was involved in the selection of farmers to host demonstration trials, taking the inventory on the general status of composting in Lushoto (Mbuzi and Milungui) and training on composting and manure management.

Compost manure is important for farmers in Lushoto. It is locally appropriate, compost is a readily available resource that addresses the immediate need of soil fertility replenishment and reversing the effects of land degradation. Because small scale farmers vary in terms of capabilities and income, making compost for them is a better option to improve their production. But having several options of CSA practices would help them to improve their soil fertility.

the methodology used during the demonstration appropriate for farmers to learn about manure compost? Q5 Was Yes

The compost expert had two sessions, a theoretical one and a practical one. For the demonstration training of compost, farmers were asked to bring materials. Based on the theoretical learning session and under the guidance of the local expert, farmers implemented compost manure in pits. Appropriately 15 farmers were doing compost manure prior to the demonstration training. This shows that they know the importance of compost, that is, to improve their soil fertility as well as production. Other farmers have now started to make compost for the upcoming season.

Yes Q3 Did CIAT project leaders take your point of views into account? Yes

If they did not take my point of view into account the demonstration training would not have been as successful as it was
