Welcome to our first edition of the St Oswald’s Community Newsletter. We hope you find something that interests you in it and perhaps an activity or group you may like to try. St Oswald’s has been active in the Glen Iris community since 1925. In that time we have provided a place for people to meet, play sport, get it, be entertained, help others and participate in worship in the Anglican tradition. Over the last twelve months or so much has happened on the corner of Seaton and High Streets. We still offer ways to get fit and move (Jazzercise classes, dance ability classes), to be entertained (concerts and events), help others (food collections, pastoral care, family support and participation in social justice issues), learn (groups in which to explore ideas, meditation, theology and interfaith dialogue) and to take time out from the ordinary world through silent retreat days, weekly worship and the coming Wominjeka Garden which will appear on the old tennis courts in the next few weeks. “Wominjeka” means welcome in the Woiwurung language and is an appropriate name for the planned community stillness and reconciliation garden we will begin on the long unused tennis court. When completed this will have gathering spaces, walking paths, seats and reflection retreats accessible to all regardless of age or mobility. It will be open to all to visit on a daily basis. Not only are you invited to visit the garden you are also invited to join us as a friend of the garden and volunteer to assist in the daily maintenance and perhaps contribute financially to its development and upkeep. Already members of the community have contributed sufficient to fund the initial development of the garden and will be appropriately acknowledged in the finished project. Another key development this year has been discussion groups that engage with people’s particular interest. These include Social Justice, Contemplative Living, Ecumenism and Interfaith Dialogue, Progressive Spirituality. These are open for all to attend and details can be found inside this newsletter. Finally, thank you for reading this and I look forward to meeting you personally some time in the future. Glenn Loughrey Vicar

VALE – Helena Lee Many people at St Oswald’s will have known Helena Lee very well, but as I did not have that opportunity, I was very interested to read about her in the newsletter for volunteers of the Ashburton Support Service. The following piece was published by Margaret Campion, Volunteer Alliance Program Co-ordinator, and with Neville Lee’s consent, she has kindly allowed me to use her article, to reminded us about two ladies whom we revere and remember fondly at St Oswald’s church, Helena Lee and Dorothy Rickards. “Sometimes, very special, and visionary volunteers manage to come up with great ideas that can keep on working miracles for years to come. Over 50 years ago, Helena Lee and her good friend Dorothy Rickards had a great idea. Why don’t we ask the council to let us convert the old tin shed Post Office on the corner of High Street and Welfare Parade into an Opportunity Shop? Helena’s husband Neville Lee was the Mayor of Camberwell, and he and other prominent citizens fully supported this idea, and helped it come to fruition. They were all very hands-on too, working hard to clean out the building, set up the shop, open for business, and then run it very successfully. And what a success story the Op Shop continues to be. A committee of local residents could see the need for community services for elderly people in the Ashburton area – they wanted Meals on Wheels, bus trips, a hall for social activities … and later perhaps even a nursing home (Samarinda Lodge), and some independent living units (Stocks Village)… The Op Shop would be used to help fund these plans. And so it happened, exactly as they conceived it. And those practical services for seniors still operate today, and even keep on growing. Helena and Neville were both able to attend the opening of the Op Shop’s refurbishments by Boroondara Council just a couple of years ago, making this a very happy and special occasion.” We owe a great debt of gratitude to Helena, and Dorothy, and others like them who worked so hard to establish the services in our area that we now take for granted. We should all strive to maintain these special amenities that make our community such a great place to live, and Margaret Campion (9885 3815) would be very pleased to hear from anyone who would like to follow in the steps of Helena Lee and volunteer at the Ashburton Support Services to assist residents and staff with art and craft activities.
