Seven of his teamhigh 12 tackles against Harding were solo tackles. OUACHITA vs. ARKANSAS TECH: 2014 RECAP ARKADELPHIA, Ark – Ouachita Tiger senior Kyle Lamothe stripped Arkansas Tech quarterback Dennis Robertson and Barkley Legens recovered the fumble with just over a minute remaining to help secure the Tigers 14-9 win over the Wonder Boys. The 18th-ranked Ouachita Tigers improve to 7-0 on the season. The Tigers scored in the first quarter on a 14 play, 63 yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. A scrambling Kiehl Frazier found Jalen Jones
in the end zone on a short three-yard pass play. On the next Tech possession, Ouachita cornerback Jeremy Small intercepted a Robertson pass and returned it 40 yards to the ATU 40 yard line. The Tigers were held to a three and out and forced to punt. Trailing 7-0 in the second quarter, Tech kicker Randy Velazquez came in to attempt a 36-yard field goal. Tigers’ defensive end Barkley Legens blocked that attempt, the first blocked kick for the Tigers this season. After trading defensive stops, Tech intercepted a pressured-Frazier pass with 2:08 remaining in the second quarter. After a seven-play drive, Velasquez connected on a 47-yard attempt to make 7-3 Ouachita, at the half. Ouachita came out firing in the second half, going 73 yards on 8 plays. Frazier found Drew White on the right side of the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown reception. It was White’s only catch on the day, as he was blanketed by Tech defensive backs all game. The Tigers stopped Tech on their next possession forcing their third punt of the day. Ouachita drove down to the Tech 15, but a Frazier fumble in the red zone ended the drive. The third quarter would end with the Tigers leading 14-3. The fourth quarter started with the fifth punt of the game for the Wonder Boys. The Tigers drove down the Tech two yard line for a first and goal for Ouachita. The Tigers’ Steven Kehner fumbled on the first play and Tech recovered it on their own five yard line. Tech could not capitalize on the turnover but eventually regained possession with 7:37 left in the game. The Wonder Boys drove the ball 64 yards on seven plays, scoring on a 25-yard pass from Robertson to Merdock and cut the lead to 14-9. The Tigers defense stopped Tech on the two-point conversion. The Tigers were forced to punt after a three and out on their next possession. Tiger punter Shetlon Wooley pinned Tech on their own two yard line with a 64-yard punt, his longest this season. Tech gained 33 yards on their first play but the drive stalled there. The Tigers regained possession after four straight incompletions. Ouachita gave the ball back to Tech on downs with 1:07 left in the game. On Tech’s first play from their own 26, defensive end Kyle Lamothe stripped the Tech quarterback. Barkley Legens jumped on the loose football to secure the Tigers seventh-straight victory. Ouachita was 7-13 on third down conversions and 2-3 on fourth down conversions. The Tiger defense recorded five sacks in the game, three by Kyle Lamothe. Jeremy Small had the Tigers’ lone interception. Zack Mitchell led the Tigers with seven tackles. Ke’Vontae Pope had four receptions for 73 yards. Jalen Jones and Drew White each had a touchdown reception. Brandon Marks led the Tigers with 58 yards on 16 carries. TODD KNIGHT
After 16 seasons as head coach at Ouachita, Todd Knight is the longest standing college head football coach in Arkansas. He has proven to be a strong leader as he heads the Ouachita program with integrity and passion. Knight has guided the Tiger program through the infant stages of NCAA Division II, from the Lone Star Conference, the Gulf South Conference and now the Great American Conference. Steady improvement began in 2002 and 2003 which marked solid squads that would help build the future of Ouachita football. In the inaugural 2011 campaign, Knight led the Tigers to their first ever Great American Conference championship, the first conference championship for the Tigers in over 20 years. The longest tenured coach in the GAC and the Tigers claimed the conference championship once again in 2014, and Knight was named GAC Coach of the Year in both championship seasons. Knight was also named 2014 AFCA Region Three Coach of the Year. Knight has established Ouachita as an elite program among all Division II institutions. He boasts Great American Conference Championships in 2011 and 2014 and 56 All-Great American Conference players in just four years. The team is the only program in the state of Arkansas to boast seven consecutive winning seasons, cracking the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 in six of seven of those seasons. The team has been ranked as high as seventh in the AFCA poll, and Ouachita finished the 2014 season ranked 10th in all of Division II. Knight leads both on and off the field, and his players have been recognized for being outstanding achievers on the field, in the classroom and in the community. He has recruited and coached six professional football players, 133 All-Conference players, 20 All-Americans, three Honorable Mention All-Americans, 30 Academic All-Conference players and many GSC honor roll athletes. During the 2014 season, the Tigers finished the regular season 10-0 for the first time in program history. After winning the its second GAC championship, Ouachita earned the top seed in the region for the Tigers’ first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament. The Tigers finished the year with one Academic All-American, two All-Americans, six All-Region selections and 18 All-Conference selections. Ouachita also had a player named to the 2014 AFCA Allstate Good Works Team. Knight’s seniors have had a 90% graduation rate and the team has been involved in service to the community for many years. He has been quoted in saying that one of the most gratifying things in coaching is watching his players grow into the total man during their time at Ouachita, graduate and go on to be successful in all aspects of life. Knight’s development at head coach has come under solid leadership, playing under coach Buddy Benson at Ouachita, and later coaching under Red Parker and Don Skelton at Delta State from 1986-1989 and David Lee at the University of Texas at El Paso from 1990-1992. When he returned to Delta State as head coach from 1993-1998, he led the team to its first ever GSC Championship in 1998, also earning GSC Coach of the Year honors that year. Knight was named to the AFCA Board of Trustees following the conclusion of the 2012 football season, adding to his list of accolades. He also served on the NCAA Rules Committee, helping to make changes and restructure the rules for the game of college football along with coaches from around the country.
