2 016 SEASON FOOTBALL OUACHITA vs. HARDING: THE SERIES
OUACHITA vs. HARDING: 2015 RECAP
The series between Harding and Ouachita dates back to 1928. That game ended in a scoreless tie. The next meeting did not occur until 32 years later. That October 8th meeting also ended in a scoreless tie.
ARKALDELPHIA, Ark. – Senior tight end Johnathan Powell caught his first career touchdown pass with 1:40 left in the fourth quarter to give the Tigers a late lead over the #12 Harding Bisons at Cliff Harris Stadium on Saturday. Barkely Legens sack and safety on Harding quarterback Park Parrish sealed the victory for Ouachita, 26-21.
The first win in the series went to Harding, achieving a 15-14 win in 1961. Ouachita’s first victory came in 1963 with a 21-6 win in Searcy, Ark. Harding leads the all-time series, 30-23-4. Their advantage in the series is due to a 10-game winning streak that stretched from 1991 to 2000. Since 2001, the longest win streak by either team has been two. Last year’s 26-21 win for the Tigers was the first win by either team on their home field since 2011. Excluding a 20-point win for Harding in 2012, the average margin of victory in this series since 2010 has been 3.6 points. OUACHITA vs. HARDING: THE NUMBERS There’s no need to fear, Underdog is here - For the third straight season, the Tigers will face a ranked Harding team. Ouachita pulled off the road win in 2014 over 13th-ranked and the upset at home last season when the Bisons were ranked 12th. High Score – Harding and Ouachita rank first and second in scoring offense and total offense. Harding is averaging a GAC-best 48.2 points per game while Ouachita is scoring 42.5. The Tigers are putting up 499.8 yards per game while Harding is averaging 452.8. Ground and Pound – To no one’s surprise, these two teams are at the top of the standings yet again in the GAC in rushing offense. Harding’s option attack is averaging a gaudy 407.5 yards per game, 90 percent of their total offense per game. The Tigers are running for 283.2 yards per game, 67 yards more than the third-best rushing team in the GAC (SWOSU). Downright stingy – The Harding defense has yet to be tested this season. They’ve allowed the fewest points per game (8.8), fewest rushing yards per game (37.2), second-fewest passing yards per game (126.2) and total yards per game (163.5). Sack Exchange – The Tigers currently sit second in the GAC with 10 sacks through four games. Demetric Jennings leads the Tigers with 3.5 sacks, while Andrew Gendi’s three-sack performance against NWOSU catapulted him into third place. KO’d – Kris Oliver’s 237 rushing yards in last week’s win over NWOSU were a career high. His 67-yard touchdown run in the middle of the fourth quarter sealed the win for Ouachita. His nine rushing touchdowns this season are tops in the GAC and fourth in Division II. Oliver has 28 rushing touchdowns through 15 games for his career, an average of 1.87 rushing touchdowns per game.
The play of the game for the Tigers came from the defense in the fourth quarter when Demetric Jennings forced a fumble on a Harding third down and three. Harding was up 21-17 on moving into the Ouachita red zone, when the ball was forced loose and recovered by Devin Price at the Ouachita 46 yard line. Austin Warford drove the Tigers 54 yards on 11 plays finding Powell in the end zone to give Ouachita the 24-21 lead. Ouachita opened the game with 48-yard kickoff return by Ke’Vontae Pope. After a 10-play 34 yard drive, the Tigers took a 3-0 lead on a 32yard field goal from Cole Antley. Harding answered with a 13 play drive that ended with a one-yard touchdown run by the Bisons quarterback. Harding extended their lead in the second quarter, capitalizing on a Tiger fumble in the red zone. The Tigers defense would swing first-half momentum by forcing a Harding three and out with seven minutes left in the second quarter. A 19-yard completion from Warford to Pope was accentuated by a personal foul penalty against the Bisons. Brandon Marks would score from two yards out to bring th Tigers within four. Harding had a chance to get back into the end zone to end the second half but a sack and forced fumble by Alex Myres gave the Tigers possession to end the half. Trailing 14-10 to start the second half, Ouachita’s defense continued to limit the Bisons option attack. They forced a Harding punt on their first possession and started their first drive of the second half on their own 21 yard line. Warford and the Tigers offense moved the ball the length of the field with a mix of run and pass, along with the help of personal foul penalty against the Bisons. On a third and 10 from the Harding 23 yard line, Warford ran through the middle of the Harding defense down to the one for a first and goal. He carried it in on the next play, giving Ouachita a 17-14 lead. Harding opened the fourth quarter with possession and capped off a 12 play, 83-yard drive with a go-ahead touchdown run by fullback Michael Latu. Ouachita answered by driving down to the Harding 14 yard line, but were turned away empty-handed after Antley’s field goal attempt was blocked. Looking like they were going to score again, Harding’s offense was denied when Demetric Jennings knocked the ball loose from Park Parrish, turning the tide of the game once again in Ouachita’s favor. The resulting touchdown drive put the Tigers up for good 24-21. Barkley Legens sack of Parrish came on a fourth and 15 from the Harding seven yard line. Ouachita’s second half success came from their ability to convert on third down (8-12) and stopping the Bisons on third down (5-10). This marked the first time in the last five games of the series that the home team won.

TODD KNIGHT After 17 seasons as head coach at Ouachita, Todd Knight is the longest standing college head football coach in Arkansas. He has proven to be a strong leader as he heads the Ouachita program with integrity and passion. Knight has guided the Tiger program through the infant stages of NCAA Division II, from the Lone Star Conference, the Gulf South Conference and now the Great American Conference. Steady improvement began in 2002 and 2003 which marked solid squads that would help build the future of Ouachita football. In the inaugural 2011 campaign, Knight led the Tigers to their first ever Great American Conference championship, the first conference championship for the Tigers in over 20 years. The longest tenured coach in the GAC and the Tigers claimed the conference championship once again in 2014, and Knight was named GAC Coach of the Year in both championship seasons. Knight was also named 2014 AFCA Region Three Coach of the Year. Knight has established Ouachita as an elite program among all Division II institutions. He boasts Great American Conference Championships in 2011 and 2014 and 70 All-Great American Conference players in just five years. The team is the only program in the state of Arkansas to boast eight consecutive winning seasons, cracking the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 in seven of eight of those seasons. The team has been ranked as high as seventh in the AFCA poll, and Ouachita finished the 2014 season ranked 10th in all of Division II. Knight leads both on and off the field, and his players have been recognized for being outstanding achievers on the field, in the classroom and in the community. He has recruited and coached six professional football players, 145 All-Conference players, 20 All-Americans, three Honorable Mention All-Americans, 30 Academic All-Conference players and many GSC honor roll athletes. During the 2014 season, the Tigers finished the regular season 10-0 for the first time in program history. After winning the its second GAC championship, Ouachita earned the top seed in the region for the Tigers’ first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament. The Tigers finished the year with one Academic All-American, two All-Americans, six All-Region selections, 18 All-Conference selections and the Division II Special Teams Player of the Year. Ouachita also had a player named to the 2014 AFCA Allstate Good Works Team. Knight’s seniors have had a 90% graduation rate and the team has been involved in service to the community for many years. He has been quoted in saying that one of the most gratifying things in coaching is watching his players grow into the total man during their time at Ouachita, graduate and go on to be successful in all aspects of life. Knight’s development at head coach has come under solid leadership, playing under coach Buddy Benson at Ouachita, and later coaching under Red Parker and Don Skelton at Delta State from 1986-1989 and David Lee at the University of Texas at El Paso from 1990-1992. When he returned to Delta State as head coach from 1993-1998, he led the team to its first ever GSC Championship in 1998, also earning GSC Coach of the Year honors that year. Knight was named to the AFCA Board of Trustees following the conclusion of the 2012 football season, adding to his list of accolades. He also served on the NCAA Rules Committee, helping to make changes and restructure the rules for the game of college football along with coaches from around the country.
